🥣 Trying different porridge toppings (today was raisins, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon and apple sauce, tasted a lil bit like Christmas pudding! 😋)

⚔️ Had a really fun DnD game last night, it had been a while and I missed that group

📞 Slowly but surely getting through all my appointments and paperwork ODAAT

  • Super Shelby does not like short walks! She insisted that we go for a proper one Wednesday and explored some new streets to add to our mileage.
  • I got an exercise streak badge back!
  • The CBC. I've been watching "Power & Politics" this week for analysis of our Government's recently dropped federal budget. We are truly blessed here to have a national public broadcaster that does top notch journalistic work.

I love this thread! I'm glad people have things in their lives to be happy about.

- My DND group didn't have a proper session, but we spent the evening talking about things that have been troubling us recently, and we were able to offer support to each other
- I've got the day off tomorrow, and am eager to go birdwatching at a new place
- I feel like I've locked in a good core of vegetarian options for weekly meal prep that I won't get bored of

:cute: saw a beautiful ground hog while at the library and then learned that some people call them Whistle Pigs. Adorable!! I wanted to hug him, but I respected his space and just took pictures from afar.

📚 got some library time, though not as much as I was hoping for

👨‍💼 had a really great second interview at a company I have been wanting to work for and I think the people interviewing me liked me, here's to hoping for a job offer soon

  • saw a chipmunk in our subdivision this week! Chipmunks used to be plentiful in towns here when I was young. But it is rare to see them here now outside of a forested area. I was happy to see one successfully co-existing with us human interlopers here.
  • a new French language series dropped on CBC Gem. (I like to watch French-language programming with English subtitles to help me improve my French skills.)
  • more palace intrigue on Parliament Hill this week which I think will result in good news for Canadians

  • the discount grocery store closest to me has extended their hours recently, which has made it significantly easier for me to get there during hours when the store is not crowded (and in the summer months will make it easier to get there in general since it was often just too hot to hike there during the summer during their old hours)
  • I often shop at two different discount grocery stores to get the best deals, and thought I would need to do that this weekend, but I was able to get everything I needed from the closer of the two stores tonight at the same or almost the same price as the further away store. This represents a significant time savings for me, since I walk to the stores and haul my groceries home in a little pull wagon. So I need to make two different trips to hit two stores, and the further away store is 4.5 km from my home.
  • after a rainy start to the day, things cleared up, and the air was crisp and clean, and the temperature mild, for both my hike to and from the grocery store, and for Shelby's walk (Snow's coming soon. But I'm going to enjoy our lovely fall weather first as much as I can!)

  • I discovered that my computer can handle playing yoga videos from a USB key.
  • This enabled me to free up over 40 GB of much needed space on my hard drive.
  • I spent some of that shiny new space scanning game components which I then used to add the Duet options to my Wingspan DLC for TTS.
Bonus good things for Shelby (because she thinks computer geekery is boring):
  • Shelby made friends with a little Corgi named Sadie today. Sadie is also a rescue. She was rescued only 5 months ago and doesn't yet quite trust that people will care about her or that other dogs will want to be her friends. But Shelby was so calm and gentle with her that Sadie made friends with her right away, and then she came to make friends with me too!
  • Shelby also made friends with a Sheltie named Willow. Willow very generously shared her very yummy homemade treats with Shelby.
  • Shelby also got liver treats from her human friend Kevin's treat box. Today was a good day!

  • we saw three red-tailed hawks on our afternoon hike
  • my MPP hosted a free community screening of Prime Minister at Hyland Cinema. Most cinemas here are corporately-owned megaplexes. But the Hyland is a single screen, independently-owned cinema that brings many hits from the Toronto, Cannes, and Sundance film festivals to London. And it's only 600 metres from my home! I initially thought I wouldn't be able to make it to the Prime Minister screening, since I have Aikido classes on Monday nights. But the forecast this night was for snow squalls. I did not want to be caught across town when they hit. So I went to the film screening instead. And it was wonderful!
  • it was snowing by the time I got out of the cinema, but the skies cleared up later on for long enough for Shelby and I to get out for a proper bedtime walk. It was 1AM by then--not exactly an early night!--but the streets were quiet and calm, with a fresh layer of snow on everything. It was beautiful and peaceful, and Shelby wanted to do our full neighbourhood walk, in spite of the late hour.

- I helped out some people today with their troubles and got good feedback. I felt like I made a small and positive difference in someone's life
- I feel like my life is moving in the right direction, despite it becoming a bit more confusing and heavier lately.
- I am loving the new TV show "Pluribus". I am quite picky when it comes to my TV/movies/books, so it feels great when I can find something enjoyable to watch.

  • I cooked something (other than pizza :tears: )! (I mean, I love pizza. And I load mine up with lots of veggies, including spinach. So they're not terrible health-wise. And they're certainly not terrible taste-wise! But pizza every day is maybe a bit much?) I made a big double batch of chickpea blondies with added chocolate chips and peanuts. Yum!
  • Shelby and I did our first winter hike of the season and my right Achilles did not completely freak out over being covered with a boot. I'm not saying the tendon was 100% happy with the situation. And we did not complete our full standard mileage. But it did not scream at me in anger, and we had hiked almost 8 km before it started to get irritated. Hopefully this is some progress.
  • I got the info posted for DAREBEE's 2025 Secret Santa Workout Gift Exchange. This event is a lot of work for me. But I love the community spirit it generates and all the creativity and consideration Bees put into designing their gifts!

  • We had a good visit with our octogenarian friend. During the summer months we have been meeting in her garden. But she has cleared out a space in her shed where we can meet on wet and wintry days. It was quite cozy, and we made up a little bed for Shelby in there with towels and a travelling blanket. Shelby looked content and had a good nap. So I think she is happy with the new set up!
  • The roads and sidewalks were cleared of the previous two days' ice, snow, and slush, making for a drier hiking experience for Shelby's tummy, and a chance for me to switch back to running shoes for a bit.
  • I got to bed at a reasonable hour and had a great night's sleep.

  • I got an important piece of writing done Thursday.
  • Nice weather for hiking, and a strong hiking companion. Shelby and I hiked a little over 8K in the afternoon, then did another just over 4K late at night. Shelby led the night hike and insisted we put in the mileage, even though it was way late at night, and we'd already done a decent hike in the afternoon. She is one strong girl!
  • My local ESA. London really stepped up its game while I was away re: respecting and protecting natural spaces within the city. As a result, there are now conservation lands with a publicly accessible trail within easy walking distance of where I live. Shelby and I enjoyed a lovely stroll along a forested trail, and multiple lookouts over the Coves ponds on our afternoon walk. During our night walk we heard some of the coyotes who live at the Coves howling.

  • I attended a virtual "People's Forum" on Friday. The event was hosted by the Ontario NDP (one of our provincial political parties) and certainly was designed, at least in part, to build support for the party. But it was a good source of information on a couple of very bad bills which our current provincial government is pushing through without public consultation or even proper debate in the Legislature (something they can do because they, unfortunately, have a majority government) and also a good reminder that, although both of these very bad bills almost certainly will pass (again because of the Conservative majority, and the fact that legislative votes in Canada--both at the federal and provincial levels--are almost always whipped) there is still value in protesting, and there will still be ways to fight back, even after the very bad bills have passed.
  • Shelby and I once again did a very late night walk Friday night (or rather: in the wee hours of Saturday morning). I am trying to shift us to an earlier sleep schedule. But nevertheless, I am grateful we live in a neighbourhood in which it is safe to walk at night. It was another mild night weather-wise. So our walk was very pleasant, calm, and peaceful. (We had a nice daytime walk as well!)
  • These days I am mostly writing to random story prompts in an effort to get my creative juices flowing again and get back into the habit of writing regularly. So (with the exception of a couple of political pieces I'm writing this week) nothing I'm working on right now is overly structured or at all high stakes. But the process is working, my resistance to sitting down at my keyboard to write is lessening, and I am having fun!

  • I've been working out again for about a month now and I've been noticing that my shoulders and knees move around much more smoothly. Less clicks and stuff. It's like somebody put a bit of oil and butter around my joints while I was sleeping
  • I've had some bad days, but I am happy to say that I stuck to my routine and did some light exercise on those days.
  • Family.

  • I ate a grapefruit! (I know this likely reads like a boring nothing on the surface. But the thing is: I love grapefruit! They're usually quite expensive here. So I cannot have them all the time. But when they come on sale for a decent price, I buy some. And then they sit in my refrigerator taking up space. Because, whenever I think about eating something, I'm usually either too lazy or too impatient to go through the process of preparing a grapefruit. I have actually had to throw grapefruit out on more than one occasion in the past because I allowed them to go bad in my refrigerator. So the fact that I got to enjoy this particular grapefruit is something I am celebrating!)
  • Shelby and I got in some decent mileage on our walks, and I went for a run, and I fetched groceries, all before the snow squalls set in.
  • I completed the second week of my return-to-writing challenge, writing for 2 hours/day on 5 days in the week.

  • Shelby and I witnessed a gorgeous sunset while out for our afternoon walk. The sky was lit up in shades of red and purple and pink, and golden light shone on the trees which still bare some leaves, adding extra pop to their already red and gold autumn colours.
  • Canada's MPs know how to do basic arithmetic. (It was a nail-biter, with all the expected political posturing. But: Phew!)
  • A good night's sleep.

  • baths (My current one is a bit nasty looking--my landlord is a bit of a slumlord who does not maintain the place well--but I'm the only person who uses it. So I know there's not anything nasty lurking in the scratched enamel. And it sure beats living without one!)
  • visiting with our neighbour. Shelby has fully taken ownership of her spot in the shed now.
  • a nice, restorative yoga practice

I don't know if you would be allowed to do this, and how expensive it would be in your place, but i know you can paint a bathtube (never test it)

I don't have money to pay for repairs to an apartment I do not own. Rents here are sky high, and maintenance is legally the responsibility of the landlord, not the tenant.

I'm feeling very grateful this morning and I haven't been on for a while, so I'm doing extra today;

👕 Wearing 2 T-shirts like it’s the late 90s/early 00s again
🎄 Looking forward to another Christmas clean and sober
🥰 Lovely supportive communities like this one, and reading through all your nice things this morning
🎁 Getting all my Christmas shopping done last night and getting some bargains in the sales
📵 Putting my phone away so I only use it for a specific reason instead of constantly scrolling
🥣 Coffee and porridge and cuddles with my wife to start the day
⚔️ Looking forward to playing DND with my friends tonight
🌞 Learning about solarpunk and liberation theology and not everything is horrible after all
🧘 Spending more time meditating and generally taking good care of myself; mind, body, and soul

  • naps
  • public libraries (there's a branch of mine less than 400 metres from where I live)
Yes! I'm planning to go to my local one tomorrow to print out my next Darebee program! There's also a free mobile library at the sober cafe today, I think I'll check it out today - you've inspired me!

  • a sunny day, and Miss Shelby was in fine form, taking us on an extra long walk around our neighbourhood. She is determined to keep me in good shape, that dog. Once we head out on a walk, she is like a little energizer bunny: she just keeps going and going and going and going!
  • on our evening walk we met up with a nice "Flower" of the black-and-white-striped kind. And did not get sprayed! Skunks get a bad rap for the potential problem of encountering one. But if one is respectful of them, they're actually quite pleasant neighbours. I am grateful that in spite of the heavy pressures humans put the habitat here, there are so many other species that are nevertheless able to maintain homes in my neighbourhood. (White-tailed deer, coyotes, common raccoons, eastern cottontails, striped skunks, eastern grey squirrels, eastern chipmunks, mice and voles, garter snakes, and northern map, midland painted, and common snapping turtles I have all seen within a km of our home, plus, of course, many species of flying critters.)
  • I got an important administrative thing done this day that had been hanging over my head for weeks and causing me no small amount of stress. I was forced to do it in a financially painful way. (Fear that this would be the case was what was causing all of the stress.) And I've no guarantee that things won't be even worse six months from now. But at least for now we are okay.

  • a perfect avocado (We're two for two on the current bag thus far. I hope this bodes well for the remainder of the bag as it contained 11 avocados in total.)
  • warm temperatures in the afternoon (for November). We were able to meet with our friend outside in her garden.
  • Shelby met up with many friends, human and canine, old and new, on our walk. (She has become very sociable in her old age, and our neighbourhood is just the best for dogs.)

Just found this thread and was reading thru all the wonderful things....must comment on the avocados bc YES! My husband is not an avocado fan but he will even join in on my happiness over 2 perfect avocados in a row. It's a rare and exciting thing! :)

  • the Thames Valley Parkway. London is trisected by the Thames River. The TVP is a car-free trail system that runs alongside the river and currently boasts 45 km of trails. Shelby and I live just over 1km from the river forks, so we have easy access to all three branches of the TVP. We hiked a favourite route along the north branch this day and saw many nice birds.
  • DAREBEETS. There are so many yummy recipes in there now! I made myself some yummy banana muffins this day. (I like the banana bread recipe. I just bake them in muffin tins instead of a loaf pan.)
  • I made a good stab at my chores this day. I got some baking done but also some much-needed dishes.

Oh I have been meaning to do this practice for a while! Okay, my 3 things today I'm grateful for...

- Keeping my stress levels low on a Sunday, where usually I'd be rushing to get a bunch of chores done.
- My oodie, which has been keeping me reliably warm in a very cold house!
- A clear blue sky today, no rain on this parade.

For Sunday:
  • I completed week #3 of my return-to-writing challenge.
  • I got an important letter written.
  • Visiting with our octogenarian friend in her garden while she helped me polish my letter.
and for Monday:
  • I'm 4 for 4 on perfect avocados in this bag so far.
  • My Prime Minister behaves like a grown up. (His speech at the G20 was truly a delight to watch.)
  • Lovely, mild weather for a night hike with Shelby.

  • birds! Shelby and I did a short nature trail as part of our hike on Tuesday. We saw Canada Geese, Mallards, Northern Cardinals, a Great Blue Heron, Bluejays, a Downy Woodpecker, a Hairy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadees, an American Goldfinch, Dark-Eyed Juncos, and (a personal fave of mine) Cedar Waxwings. Then a bit later we saw a Red-bellied Woodpecker in a tree in our friend's yard.
  • silicone muffin pan liners. These are a game-changer for muffins, mini-quiches, etc.
  • walkable neighbourhoods. This day Shelby and I walked to the vet's, then we hiked a nearby nature trail, then we walked to a friend's house. She wasn't home as she was out fetching groceries. So we walked in to the Village, met up with our friend at the store, walked her home, visited with her for while, then walked back to our own home. This was all an easy walk for us and did not even hit our target mileage for the day.

  • a productive day: I fetched groceries, did laundry, washed almost all of my dishes, got the assignments out to all of the Santas in my crew, and wrote my letter to Santa
  • my wagon, which makes grocery shopping so much easier and also less time-consuming as I'm able to fetch more groceries in one trip with the wagon
  • this week's threatened winter storm has dumped almost no snow in my neighbourhood thus far
