Something is flying south
A carter on the north road
Passed a flock on the north road last night. Not a dozen birds. Hundreds. Low over the hedges, all headed the same way and all honking like they had somewhere to be.
Stopped at the inn at Millbrook to tell someone and the innkeeper went very quiet. Said the village has about twelve geese and that is twelve too many.
Did not stay for breakfast. The sky was full of them by the time I left and the miller was standing in the road holding his hat with both hands.
Thought the guild should know. Somebody there is going to be writing a letter.
Passed on in haste,
A carter who would rather not be named
