Members Only Logs Added - Your Diary, Your Door Policy
We have added a privacy setting to the logs. Until now every log in Checking In | Logs was readable by anyone on the internet, logged in or not, and indexed by search engines. From today each log owner can decide whether their log stays open to everyone or is read by community members only.
What it does
Every log in Checking In | Logs now has a Members only button on its cover, next to Browse by month and Read as a journal. Only the owner of the log can see it and press it. Switched on, your log is read by logged-in community members exactly as before, but anyone who is not logged in - visitors, lurkers, search engines - sees the cover and a short notice saying the log is for members only, with a link to log in or join. No entries, no replies, no preview text. Search engines are told not to index it. In the section list your log carries a small Members only mark so people know before they click.
Switched off, your log is open to everyone, which is how it has always been and how it stays unless you change it.
How to use it
1. Open your log and look at the cover at the top.
2. Press Members only. The page reloads with the button in red and a short line explaining the setting.
3. That is it. Press it again any time to open the log back up.
Good to know
Nothing about your log's address changes - links people have saved, links to specific entries, Browse by month, all still work. The only difference is what a logged-out visitor sees when they follow one. Moderators cannot flip the switch for you; it is yours alone. And whichever way it is set, your log is still visible to every member of the community, so this is a door between you and the open internet, not between you and us.
If something looks off after you switch it - an entry showing where it should not, a notice where it should not - we would be glad to hear about it here.
