Underdstanding kicks

Hello everyone!

What's the difference between a side kick and a turning kick? I tried watching the exercise video, but they look the same to me.

Thanks in advance!

hi @joyfullife the main difference is where the power goes (direction): straight (side kick) or sideways (turning kick). I like to compare them to a punch (side kick) and a slap (turning kick). They look similar when someone is doing them fast, but they are actually two very different kicks.

Here you go - watch where the bag swings and where @Damer 's foot lands:

side kick:

turning kick:

I hope this helps :thankyou:

In a side kick you attack with the bottom of your foot. From my personal experience it feels like pushing your leg forward from your butt, followed by straightening you knee in a forward direction with the pushing force from the butt/thigh. In a turning kick it's more like attacking with your shin and the back of your foot by snapping your lower leg into straight knee, the knee straightening in a horizontal direction.
