"Striving to be the change."
The Secret Santa Workout Gift Exchange is back for 2024! Here's how it works:
  1. You must have an active Check-In Thread here in the Hive to participate. This is so your Santa can read up on the types of workouts you like to do, so they can design a suitable "gift" for you. * If you're new here: Welcome! You can still join in if you set up a new check-in thread now and post at least three updates prior to the Secret Santa assignments going out. (More is better.) Also: if there's not much content in your check-in thread yet, please post an intro/summary of where you're at in your fitness journey right now.
  2. If you'd like to join in, sign up by commenting on this thread. The deadline to join is Sunday, November 24, 2024.
  3. If you decide to join in, you will be assigned your giftee, either by me or by my assistant elf (if somebody volunteers to assist me with this task), via DAREBEE private message. Santa assignments will be delivered by Wednesday, November 27. Be sure to check your in-box!
  4. Once you receive your assignment, go and read your giftee's check-in thread. (If it's really long, just reading the most recent couple of pages is fine.) Then design a 15-30 minute workout that you think will be fun and challenging for your giftee to complete. The theme of the workout is: The Great Getaway Gala. (More on this below.) Write up the workout, and send it via DAREBEE private message, either to me or to my assistant elf (whichever elf gave you the assignment). The deadline for turning in your gift is Saturday, December 7. DO NOT BE LATE!
  5. I will post all of the workout gifts here in this thread (so you won't know who your gift came from). Your gift will be posted here no later than Sunday, December 22. (The Gift-Wrapping Elf and the Dragon Elf need time to get the gifts wrapped and delivered. Which is why you need to get your gifts submitted on time!)
  6. You must complete your workout gift and post in your check-in thread that you did it, no later than Sunday, January 5, 2025.
  7. Is it better to give, or to receive? To investigate this question, you must also complete the gift you gave and post about doing so in your check-in thread. To make it harder for your giftee to identify you, you may break up this workout across multiple days and/or be vague in describing the exercises you did. The deadline for completing this is also Sunday, January 5.
  8. Read up on your fellow Bees' holiday adventures in their check-in threads and try to guess who was your Santa!

The Rules:
  1. Try to wrap your gift in a story that explains why your giftee must complete the exercises you have assigned to them. (For some inspiration, check out the awesome gifts that were created for last year's workout gift exchange.) The theme for these stories is: It's been a year, right? The Bees have decided that for our holiday party this year we truly need to get away from it all. So we've planned a getaway to a wonderful, magical land, where the sun always shines, and colours are vibrant and bright. (Unless you prefer shade and muted colours, in which case there is a shade tree that follows you wherever you buzz, and you see only calming, subtle colours--this is a magical land, after all!) In this land the sweetest, most-nourishing nectar drips effortlessly out of giant flowers, flowing freely like rain (and magically tastes like whatever you want it to taste like). But the trouble with galas in far-distant magical lands is that one has to find a way to get to them before the fun can begin, and this can be tricky business. Will your giftee Bee encounter wild weather, rough terrain, road bandits, or mischievous critters en route? Will they forge a path they and their fellow Bees can follow on foot, or build some sort of contrivance to make the journey easier? Whatever the challenges the journey entails, your giftee Bee will conquer them through completing their workout gift.
  2. Don't be gruesome! We're here to challenge one another. But also to have fun. The workout you design is meant to be a gift. Do not assign anyone 100 burpees! (Unless they've written recently in their check-in thread about how much they LOVE burpees and really hope that Santa will gift them with a high volume of them.)
  3. All exercises assigned should be no-equipment exercises--unless you know from reading your giftee's recent check-in posts that they have regular access to the equipment you're asking them to use.
  4. If you assign an obscure exercise, you need to include a link to a demo of how to do it. Anything in the DAREBEE video exercise library is fair game (if it's within your giftee's wheelhouse). For yoga poses, please use pose names from the Pocket Yoga pose library (or provide a link to a demo if you're assigning a specific sequence, or a pose that's not in that library).
  5. Modifications are fine! If you are gifted with push-ups, but can only do kneeling push-ups at this point in your fitness journey, for example, it's fine to do the kneeling variety. Conversely: if you assign your giftee step-jacks as part of their workout, because you've read in their check-in thread that they're not doing high impact activities at the moment, but you want to do jumping jacks as part of your "gift you gave" workout, this is fine too. Try to complete both the gift you receive, and the gift you gave to the best of your ability, using exercise variations that are right for you. In the Hive, we honour where each individual bee is at in their own fitness journey at this moment in time.
  6. You are welcome to include fun activities in the gift you design (e.g.: singing, dancing, etc.) if they are appropriate for your giftee Bee.
  7. All of the gifts, like last year, will be gift-wrapped in the DAREBEE way. To assist you in designing a gift of a suitable length, and to assist the Gift-Wrapping Elf in wrapping your gift, we have some guidelines this year on the number of exercises that can be included. Please see below for details.
  8. If you have any questions--either about designing your gift, or about how to complete your gift once you've received it, please post them here. (Or you can PM me if posting your question publicly would give away too much about the gift you're designing.) I will try to answer all gift questions myself (so your Secret Santa does not need to out themself by answering themself). Santas: I, or my assistant elf, may contact you via PM if a question is asked about the gift you gave which I don't know how to answer.
  9. The December 7 deadline is a HARD DEADLINE. Please don't miss it! If you sign up to participate in this gift exchange, you are committing to designing a workout gift for one of your fellow Bees, and submitting it to me (or my assistant elf) between November 27 and December 7, 2024.
  10. Have fun!

All of the gifts, like last year, will be gift-wrapped in the DAREBEE way. To assist you in designing a gift of a suitable length, and to assist the Gift-Wrapping Elf in wrapping your gift, please adhere to the following considerations:

  1. Your gift will be presented in 3 rows. Each row can contain 1 to 4 exercises.
  2. You may include combo exercises. Each part of the combo counts towards the 4 exercises/row limit.
  3. You may, if you like, split the gift up into two or three parts, by rows. Each row should use the same workout type protocol (i.e.: classic, circuit, once through).
  4. The final exercise can be a "filler" (something done between each of the preceding exercises) or a "finisher" (something done only once, at the end of the entire workout).
Examples:

A basic circuit style workout, containing 2 rows with 3 exercises each, and 1 row with 1 exercise:

A basic classic style workout, containing 1 row with 3 exercises, and 2 rows with 2 exercises each:

A basic workout with no sets, containing 3 rows with 4 exercises each:

A circuit style workout that includes combos. This one has 3 rows with 3 exercises each:

A workout in two parts. Part 1 includes 2 rows of exercises and uses a circuit style protocol. Part 2 includes 1 row of 1 exercise done with a classic style protocol:

day04.jpg

A workout with "filler" exercises. This is a classic style workout of 2 rows with 4 exercises per row. The third row shows the "filler" which is done between each of the preceding exercises:

A circuit style workout with a "finisher" exercise:

Any questions: ask the Dragon Elf!

Gift Exchange Timeline:

Sunday, November 24, 2024
: deadline to sign-up (everybody)
Wednesday, November 27: deadline for delivery of Secret Santa assignments (dragon elf and assistant elf)
Saturday, December 7: deadline for designing your gift and submitting it to the appropriate elf (everyone)
Sunday, December 22: deadline for Laura to post all workout gifts (dragon elf)
Sunday, January 5, 2025: deadline for completing both the gift you gave and the one you receive (everyone)

There is one additional important date for the Assistant Elf (should anyone choose to take on this role):

The assistant elf is responsible for collecting the gifts from half of the Santas, and forwarding them to me (via copy and paste into new PMs, so as to strip the original sender's name from the gift) by the end of the day on Sunday, December 8. (The Santas in my group will be designing gifts for the Santas in the assistant elf's group, and vice versa. This is done so that both I and the assistant elf can play too, and our Santas will remain a secret from us.)

2024 Theme Recap (to make it easy to find, because the first post in this thread is long!):

The Great Getaway Gala

It's been a year, right?

Will they forge a path they and their fellow Bees can follow on foot, or build some sort of contrivance to make the journey easier? Whatever the challenges the journey entails, your giftee Bee will conquer them through completing their workout gift.

Reminder: You have two days (and a few hours, as I type this) left to sign up for this year's Secret Santa Workout Gift Exchange! I'll be closing sign-ups at end of day (AoE) on Sunday, November 24. (In practice, this will happen when I get to my computer on Monday morning. Which will likely be slightly after that time.)

Call for help: Would anyone like to serve as this year's Assistant Elf? The role of the Assistant Elf is a small but important one. (Well, it's important to me as it allows me to participate in the gift exchange too!) Your role (should you choose to accept it) as Assistant Elf would be to match up half of the Santas with their gift recipients (I will tell you which half), collect the gifts from your Santas, strip any Santa-identifying details from them (i.e.: copy the text they send you into a fresh DM--so that I cannot see where it originated from), and then forward them to me.

The 2024 Secret Santa Workout Gift Exchange is now CLOSED to further entries.

Thank you to everyone who signed up this year! Let the festivities begin!

What happens next?

Over the next couple of days you will receive a private message here on DAREBEE, either from me (the Dragon Elf) or from @Saffity (the Gopher Elf) to let you know who you will be creating your workout gift for. Please watch your inbox for that to come in.

If you've not been posting much in your check-in thread recently, please be sure and get some fresh updates in there this week, so that when a Santa is assigned to you they'll be able to see what sorts of workout activities you're doing these days. Also: a couple of you have changed your log-in thread recently. Please be sure to update the URL for your check-in thread on your profile, so your Santa will be able to find it!

Here is a sample letter to Santa that I wrote to help my Secret Santa design an awesome gift for me. It is not mandatory to write such a letter if your check-in thread already includes the minimum 3 entries (everyone's does) and accurately reflects the types of workout activities you are doing these days. I present this only as an idea for something you might want to post. It can be helpful particularly if you want to highlight workout activities you love but haven't been doing enough of lately, and/or you have injury concerns you need to make certain Santa knows about, and/or you have workout equipment you like to use. (The default is to assume your gift-recipient has no equipment, unless their check-in thread clearly demonstrates that they do.)

All of the Secret Santa assignments have now gone out! If you have not seen yours, please be sure to check your DAREBEE Direct Messages.

When you have completed your gift, please forward it privately to whichever elf (either me or Saffity) gave you the assignment, no later than the end of day on Saturday, December 7.

Can't wait to see all the wonderful gifts this year!

Ho, ho, ho, Santa Bees! Santa's sleigh will be making the rounds today, dropping off your workout gifts right here in this very thread!

I remain hopeful that I will be able to deliver all of the gifts today. But please bear with me if there is a delay on some of them. There will definitely be gaps in the delivery schedule as the Dragon Elf and Reindeer Shelby will need to disembark from the sleigh multiple times throughout the day to eat and stretch our legs. (In our new North Pole hideaway, Reindeer Shelby cannot simply nip out into the yard when she has business to attend to. We need to go for a proper walk. With it being frigid outside here today, but hot inside, there will be a considerable amount of time devoted to putting on and taking off clothing.) Also: while the Dragon Elf did count the gift she created as a story for her story-a-week challenge, that story was not written this week. And this week's story is not yet finished. So the Dragon Elf will need to do some moonlighting on that project today. (Naughty Dragon Elf: spending too much time decorating the tree and playing in the snow! As usual.) All the other elves were good though, and finished their jobs on time. So kudos to them!

More to come soon!

Gift for @graoumia :

All Aboard the Darebee Express

It's been quite a trip, but after four days on the train your destination is in sight. Only one more night of sleep until the Darebee Express arrives at the Getaway Gala! You and your fellow bees have been giddy with excitement all day, but now it's time to get some rest before the festivities begin. While the cabins are luxurious, sleeping on a train remains a challenge, so you have developed a nice stretching routine to get ready for bed.

Hold each position for 30 seconds, breathing slowly in and out:

downward facing dog
upward facing dog
mountain pose with arms behind your back
mountain pose with arms above your head

Just as you're feeling all limber and relaxed, you hear a faint voice coming from the hallway.
"Au secour!"
Is that someone calling for help?
"Au secour! Au Secour!" you hear again as you throw open the door to your compartment.
When you stick your head out to peer into the dark hallway, you see a small orb of yellow light coming towards you. In so far as it's possible for a ball of light to look upset, this one looks very, very upset.
"Oh ma chère Graoumia, I am so glad you are still awake! Please come quickly, c'est terrible!"
Without a second thought you spring into action and follow that glowing orb.
Run for it! Or if your knees protest the late hour, a glowing spirit bicycle appears beside you.

5 sets of 3x : 10 High Knees + 1 tuck jump
or:
Stationary bike: 5 sets of 20 seconds fast + 40 seconds moderate pedalling

While you make your way through the train towards the locomotive, you notice that this is not simply a glowing orb, it is in fact a glowing bee, it's abdomen the size and colour of a mirabelle. Could this be one of the fabled Hive Spirits? When you finally make the last jump to the locomotive, you enter to see two distressed bears in soot-stained overalls carefully trying to move lumps of coal. They look at you with pleading eyes.
"The Hive of Festivities fell and got covered by the coal! Our paws are so big, we're worried we'll hurt the hive!"
You know what to do, time to move this coal around!

3 sets of 10 reps each:

dumbbell deadlifts
bent over rows
twists

At last, you see a large glowing beehive emerge from beneath the coal. As you lift the largest remaining lumps, more spirits emerge and lift the smaller pieces. You gently pick up the shimmering hive, feeling the warmth and vibrations of the activity inside. You lift it above your head and the Hive Spirits begin to fly around you, making tighter and tighter circles as they rise to the top of the hive. Then, with a magical sounding 'plop' and the chiming of bells, the hive is affixed to its customary point on the ceiling of the locomotive. The bears and spirits cheer and thank you profusely, and after plenty of hugs, the spirits together lift you up and bring you back to your cabin.

"Merci beaucoup, ma chère Graoumia, you saved the Getaway Gala!"

Gift for @Anek :

The Hive was locked up tight for the holiday season as the Bees loaded up in their magical carriages to head to their holiday party. After the various craziness that happened at the holiday party last year, it was decided that getting away from it all was the best way to go.

Plus it was much more fun to exercise in the warmth than the snow.

The carriages took off and they were on their way, excited to see what a magical land looked like. Was it the same for everyone, or the perfect getaway for each person?

As they gazed out the windows, they realized that, rather than clearing up, the snow appeared to be falling much heavier! The drifts were getting deeper, so deep in fact, that the carriages became stuck! There was nothing for it, the Bees had to dig themselves out!

Repeat 3 times to get the carriages free:

Combo: 10 Squat + Knee to Elbow
20 Scissor Chops
20 Arm Scissors

Now that the carriages were free of snow, the Bees were ready to be back on their way. They were just climbing in when *PAFF a snowball hit the side of the carriage, followed by another!

Looking around, they saw green hats peeking from behind trees, and snowmen that they were pretty sure hadn’t been there before.

“How dare you run away and just leave all the beautiful snow!” A voice called as a little elf’s head poked out from his hiding spot. “Every year we hear complain complain complain about white holidays and now we make sure you have one and you just up and leave?!”

The elves and snowmen took up the cry and began firing snowball after snowball at the Bees. The barrage rained down hard and fast, watch out! Dodge the snowballs, take out the snowmen, and chase away the elves!

Repeat 3 times to win the battle:

10 Side-to-Side Lunges
20 Side Kicks
20 High knees

As the last snowman falls and the last elf runs away, the Bees cheered as the snow began to melt and the way was cleared for them to continue. The carriages warmed up as they got nearer to their magical destination. They peeled off their heavy winter wear and stepped out to the perfect temperature. The only thing left to do was to grab a drink and lay out beside the pool, beach, or whatever perfect spot was created for them, and enjoy the perfect level of sun.

Repeat 3 times for the perfect tan:

20 Count Hollow hold
5 Long Arm Crunches
5 Back Extensions

Happy Holidays!!

Gift for @Damer :

Everything is quiet at DAREBEE HQ. Neila left this morning with her pups, leading all the Bees on an expedition to some magical land where… something something about sunshine and rainbows and funny-tasting flowers. You weren’t paying all that much attention to the party plans. You helped to decorate the DAREtree. You gave as good as you got in the Snowfight. But now it’s time to get down to business. You’ve got Guides to write, videos to record. The work never ends! So, with your Grinch hat firmly affixed to your head, you get down to it.

Since you have the Hive gym all to yourself today you figure it’s the perfect time to record some videos. You’ve got the perfect Exercise Snack you want to introduce to everyone in the New Year: a one-armed, one-legged burpee with a clap push-up and a front kick. That’ll get everyone’s hearts pumping! Your Grinchly self chuckles with glee as you imagine the looks on all the Bees’ faces when they see that one.

You get your cell phone all set up in the gym and are about to press ‘record’ when you catch a glint in the corner of your eye that draws your attention back to the office. You notice the snow in your snow globe is swirling. Odd, because you hadn’t disturbed it lately.

Is there someone back there? You thought everyone had left for the party already.

“Hello?” you call out. “Olllie? Bennie?” Maybe Neila changed her mind about taking the dogs, and they’re scampering around in the office making a mess? Or…?

You’d better go check it out.

So you return to the office. But nobody is there. Not even the dogs.

The snow in your snow globe is still swirling though.

You pick up the snow globe, give it a little shake…

… and the white flakes inside turn to gold.

That was unexpected!

You peer closer at the globe and see through the falling flakes of gold familiar faces: There’s Saffity, dancing around a giant flower with Munchie and Biggie. Anek and graoumia are relaxing in lounge chairs beside a large, hexagonal pool, sipping brightly-coloured drinks through elaborately-curled straws. Maegaranthelas, Syrius, and f1shie sit at a table nearby, sharing a giant platter of garlic fries, while Sólveig and Jiolfi do burpees on the pool deck. NancyTree and Heeropotter are wandering around with cameras, photographing everything in sight. All the puppies and kitties are basking in the sun—save for Cooper who is boofing at the others for being flaked out and not playing with him, and the kitten Erebus, who is valiantly trying to catch a hold of Cooper’s wagging, feathery tail. Somehow your snow globe is showing you a scene of the DAREBEEs’ Great Getaway Gala!

You smile at everyone’s enjoyment of the party.

But then the flakes inside your snow globe change colour once again. Now they are dark and grey, and instead of falling gently are driving sideways across the scene. The Bees all start shouting and running about. The dogs and cats and kids all huddle underneath tables, trying to find shelter from the driving rain.

“I thought bad weather wasn’t supposed to happen in the Hallowed Honey Heartland,” you say.

“I thought bad weather wasn’t supposed to happen here,” echoes princess_sarena in your snow globe.

The wind picks up then, sending tables and chairs and anything else not firmly rooted to the ground flying. The garlic fries scatter on the pool deck, but they’re so cold and soggy by this point, not even Shelby is interested in them.

“It isn’t!” shouts Laura Rainbow Dragon, raising her voice to be heard above the gale force winds. “When I planned this event I was assured of favourable weather for all!”

The scene in your snow globe changes once again. Now the flecks have turned white again. But they’re round and hard. The Bees are being pelted with hail!

“The weather server must be offline,” says Laura.

“Can we reboot it?” asks Matan. “Has anyone got a key to the server room?”

“I do!” says neilarey. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out…

… an empty hand.

“Oh, no.”

The other Bees all stare at Neila. “Oh, no?” they say in unison.

Neila looks sheepish. “I must have left the key back at DAREBEE HQ.”

You look over at Neila’s normally immaculate desk. Sure enough, there’s a big, shiny, golden key sitting right on top of the pristine white desk. You pick up the key. It looks like you’re going to be attending the Great Getaway Gala after all.

#

Unfortunately, since you hadn’t planned on attending the Getaway Gala, you hadn’t made note of the instructions for how to get there. The place isn’t noted on any maps. So you’re unlikely to be able to find it on your own. You snatch up the golden server room key and head out in search of some help.

Usually people have to travel down rabbit holes, or across large bodies of water to reach magical lands, don’t they? You look around you but don’t spot any Damer-sized holes. So you decide to head to the beach.

Sure enough, when you reach the beach you find a woman standing near the shoreline dressed in a green jacket and breeches with red-and-white-striped stockings, and black shoes with ridiculous curled-up pointed toes. A golden bell dangles from the tip of each toe point. The woman’s purple hair is braided into seven stiff braids that fan out from her head like a tiara. A miniature Santa hat sits perched on the end of each braid.

Is this how elves dress these days? You’re not sure. But the woman sure doesn’t look like a local. Besides which, she’s standing in front of a giant contraption that looks like a cross between a sail boat, an eagle, and a pipe organ.

There aren’t any more likely prospects about. So you approach the woman.

“Hello!” you say. “I’m Damer from DAREBEE. I’m trying to reach my friends in the Hallowed Honey Heartland. Do you know how I might get there?”

“You’re in luck, Damer from DAREBEE! I am Captain Sassafras of the Airship Penelope. I’m headed towards the Hallowed Honey Heartland myself and am in need of hearty souls such as yourself to help crew my ship. Are you in?”

You’re about the explain that you’ve never crewed an airship the likes of Penelope before and ask what’s involved when Captain Sassafras shouts, “All aboard!”

A long line of people in all manner of strange attire suddenly materializes on the beach beside you and begins marching up the gangplank into Penelope, with Captain Sassafras at their lead.

This is not how you had envisioned your day going at all. But your DAREBEE friends need you. So you join the line and march up the plank into the airship.

Inside the ship, Captain Sassafras assigns you to a line of people who are standing side-by-side across Penelope’s deck, behind a row of wooden levers.

“Pump the organ, crew!” shouts Captain Sassafras.

The people in line with you start doing knight steps, dropping first their right knee onto a lever, then their left onto the lever beside it, then standing again, lifting first their right knee, then their left. Then they repeat the sequence in the opposite direction.

“Come on Damer from DAREBEE!” shouts Sassafras. “Do you want to get to the Hallowed Honey Heartland or don’t you?”

You start doing knight steps.

The great pipes strung across Penelope’s masts start to emit a song that sounds like a cross between a hurdy-gurdy cranking out a folk ballad and thrash metal, and Penelope rises into the sky. Is this the route everyone else took to get to the Getaway Gala? It’s certainly an odd method of travel. But at least you’re making progress.

You and the knight-stepping crew find a good rhythm, and Penelope picks up speed, sailing smoothly, if cacophonically across the sky. All is going well, until Captain Sassafras shouts, “Kraken!”

Kraken? Aren’t they sea monsters? What are they doing up here in the sky?

The crew members on either side of you drop to their knees and continue pumping up and down from a toe squat position.

“Damer from DAREBEE!” shouts Captain Sassafras. “Get down crewman! Unless you want the kraken to eat you!”

You see them then: a great school of flying monsters, with giant many-fanged maws and undulating winged tentacles. They’re flying right at Penelope with those hideous maws wide open.

You do not want to be eaten by a flying kraken! You get down.

Captain Sassafras, however, does not. She remains standing proud on Penelope’s top deck, swinging a great broadsword in circles above her head. You hear an almighty crack as her sword makes contact with one of the kraken, then a loud thud as the beast’s head drops to the deck in front of you. A foul-smelling green goo spills out of the creature’s skull and sluices down the deck towards you.

“Legs up, crew!” shouts Sassafras. Kraken blood will boil the flesh right off yer bones!”

The other crew in your line all lift their knees and feet off the ground, dangling from their arms in pendant pose. (Hands are apparently immune to kraken blood.)

“Damer from DARABEE!” shouts Sassafras.

“I know, I know!” you shout back, lifting your own legs up. You surely do not want the Kraken blood to boil your flesh!

The kraken blood has soon all washed past, and those beasts still living, having witnessed the ferocity with which Sassafras defends her ship, decide to move on to easier prey. You’re about to stand up to resume your organ-pumping work, but the Captain shouts, “Stay out of sight, crew! Low as you can! These here are treacherous skies. Let’s try to sneak through without attracting anymore attention.”

You’re on a giant flying ship that looks like a cross between a sail boat, an eagle, and a pipe organ that’s blasting out a song that sounds like a cross between a hurdy-gurdy cranking out a folk ballad and thrash metal. How on earth are you meant to sneak through anywhere without attracting attention? But when the rest of the crew in your line drop into plank positions and begin doing plank up-downs, you decide your questions can wait.

With all the crew low to the deck doing plank up-downs, things do appear to be smooth sailing once again. But from your new vantage point you can see through the ship’s scuppers down to the ground far below. You see the Hallowed Honey Heartland growing closer and closer. But then Penelope sails right on past it!

“Captain!” you call out. “I think we just passed the Hallowed Honey Heartland!”

“Right you are, Damer from DAREBEE,” says Sassafras.

“So… why aren’t we landing?”

“Why would we land?”

“Because that’s where we’re going.”

“That’s not where I’m going,” says Sassafras.

“But you said—”

You stop yourself. Sassafras had said she was heading towards the Hallowed Honey Heartland. She’d not said it was her final destination.

“Damer from DAREBEE, do you want to jump ship?” asks Sassafras.

“My friends are down there,” you say. “I need to get to them.”

“Parachutes are stowed at the stern,” says Sassafras, pointing the way with a thumb over her shoulder.

You start to stand up to head back to the stern.

“Stay low!”

Right. Right. Right. You army crawl to Penelope’s stern, strap on a parachute, and jump.

After an uneventful superman glide to the ground you land in a field of tall grasses. There’s a row of trees on one side of the field that appears to stretch back into a forest. But there are no Bees in sight. No giant flowers. No strange weather patterns. The sky for miles around is clear and blue. You could have sworn you didn’t overshoot the Hallowed Honey Heartland by that much. But there’s nothing out of the ordinary here at all.

Nothing save for the giant praying mantis dressed in a pinstripe suit sitting on a toadstool, calmly sharpening its foreleg teeth on a whetstone.

You approach the mantis.

“Hi!” you say. “I’m—”

“Damer from DAREBEE,” says the mantis. “Yes. I know.” It continues to sharpen its foreleg teeth.

“How did… how did you know my name?” DAREBEE has long been a popular website. But you had no idea even praying mantids were using it now!

The mantis looks up and stares at you through its huge, bulbous eyes. “I know many things,” it says. Then it returns to its sharpening.

“I see,” you say. “And you are…?”

“Fred,” says the praying mantis.

“Fred?”

Fred puts down the whetstone and looks up at you again, flexing its newly-sharpened forelimbs. “You got a problem with my name, Damer from DAREBEE?”

“No. Not at all.”

“Good,” says Fred. “I suppose you’ve come to ask me the way to your friends in the Hallowed Honey Heartland.” Apparently your intentions are one of the many things Fred knows.

“I have,” you admit.

“Fred nods sagely. “It’s just on the other side of that forest.”

“Thank you!” You bow to Fred the mantis, then start to head towards the treeline.

“But you’re going to have to shoot the duck first.”

“Shoot the duck?”

Fred pantomimes pulling the trigger on a long gun by squatting low on one of its hind limbs, with the other hind limb stretched out in front of it.

You look up. The cloudless sky has not a duck in sight.

“What duck?” you ask.

“That duck,” says Fred, pointing.

You look where he’s pointing and see a bright yellow rubber ducky flying low over the grass towards you. It looks cute and happy and harmless…

… until it opens its mouth and you see razor-sharp snakelike fangs top and bottom. Those fangs are heading straight for your shin.

What is it with scary-mouthed creatures in these lands? you think. Then you drop into a pistol squat “shooting the duck.”

The duck strikes your heel and disintegrates in a puff of smoke.

“Well done,” says Fred. “Better shoot that one too.”

You do. And the next one. And the next one. And the one after that. But now the ducks are flying at you too fast. There’s no time to go up and down in between each attack. So you hold your squat as the ducks smash against your heel, one after another, and disintegrate.

When you’ve obliterated the last of the fang-toothed rubber ducks, you put your leg down, happy for the rest.

“Best to shoot that duck too,” says Fred, pointing behind you.

You turn around, and sure enough: there is another yellow rubber ducky flying low across the grass towards you. You do some pistol squats and another pistol squat hold on the other side to take care of this new assault.

When the second barrage of rubber ducks has been laid to rest you look around you, wary of what might come next.

“Well, what are you waiting for, Damer from DAREBEE?” asks Fred. “Your friends are through there.” He points again towards the forest.

“Thank you, Fred,” you say. Then you set off at a trot for the forest.

“Better stay low, Damer!” Fred calls out. “Head below the top of the grasses is best if you want to keep it attached in these parts.”

You nod your thanks once again. Then you squat walk to the tree line and through the forest.

The forest turns out to be just a narrow strip of trees. But when you emerge from the other side of it you find you are not in the Hallowed Honey Heartland at all, but on a beach. A beach on which a woman is standing near the shoreline dressed in a green jacket and breeches with red-and-white-striped stockings, and black shoes with ridiculous curled-up pointed toes with golden bells on their tips. Her purple hair is braided into seven stiff braids that fan out from her head like a tiara, with miniature Santa hats adorning the end of each braid. She’s standing in front of a giant contraption that looks like a cross between a sail boat, an eagle, and a pipe organ.

Your heart sinks. But you don’t know what else to do. So you cross the beach, calling out, “Hello again, Captain Sassafras!”

“Have we met?” asks Sasafras.

You’re confused. “I think so? I’m Damer. From DAREBEE. I was just on your ship. I’m trying to get to the Hallowed Honey Heartland.”

“You’re in luck, Damer from DAREBEE! I am Captain Sassafras of the Airship Penelope. I’m headed towards the Hallowed Honey Heartland myself and am in need of hearty souls such as yourself to help crew my ship.”

“I know,” you say. “But I’ve already tried this. You really don’t remember?”

Captain Sassafras shrugs. “Things tend to have a cyclical nature in these parts,” she says. “You generally have to do everything three, five, sometimes even seven times to get anywhere. I try to put those old cycles out of my head and just concentrate on doing the best I can on the one I’m on.”

You nod. “That’s a good idea, Captain.”

“Right then,” says Sassafras. “Are you in? All aboard!”

You follow Captain Sassafras and the other suddenly-appeared crew members back onto Penelope.

#

When you have completed the required number of circuits, your final squat walk through the forest takes you to a land of wild weather and giant flowers where all the Bees are huddled together outside the locked weather server room. Everyone cheers when they see you approaching, key in hand.

You soon have the door unlocked and the weather server rebooted. Blissful weather returns to the Hallowed Honey Heartland, and you happily join all the other Bees in your gala celebration. The work can wait for tomorrow.

You land on a beach.
The distant sounds of the Darebee Getaway Gala drift through the air.
As you wander along the shoreline, searching for an entrance in the thick foliage, you're suddenly ambushed!

Marines? What?! Do they think you're a pirate? There's no time to figure it out — they attack!
Luckily, they seem really clumsy, probably just cadets.
No choice now. Jump, dodge, and avoid!:

16 Elbow plank crunches
16 Jumping jacks
20 toe tap hops + 4 Side-to-side jumps combo

16 Climber taps
16 Hops on the spot
20 High knees + 2 jump knee tuck combo

You're too fast for them, you move like a shadow.

"Roronoa Zoro! Surrender!”

“Wha...?” They don’t let you finish and they attack again.

“I'm not Zoro” you say

“You look and move like him“

As they attack for the third time you glance down, and realize you're wearing your cosplay costume.

That last “set” left them wheezing. What a workout this was!

"Well, I'm not him, so scram!" you say as they try to catch a breath.

They are extremely exhausted and confused, but they believe you, they retreat slowly crawling towards their ship.

You sink onto the sand, bewildered.

"What just happened?"

Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath.

10 minutes meditation

You feel something wet touch your face, you open your eyes and see Cooper, the fluffiest boy, standing over you and giving you smooches. You look around, you're already at the Darebee Getaway Gala, and you're looking like yourself again.

All your friends are here, and the smell of garlic fries fills the air.

Was all of that just a dream?
And why is there sand in your shoes?

You draw your attention to the snowy peaks that decorate the landscape of this gorgeous land. You've seen them on pictures and postcards, but this is the first time you notice those twin mountains, as they certainly look much bigger in person. As you approach the place of the gala, you notice a flyer that shows all the fun activities that everyone, from tourists to people who live here can do. The peaks are home to those who love skiing, snowboarding, climbing in the snow... it is an attraction that draws a lot of attention.

"You know what? Let's go!" you say to yourself, grabbing one of those flyers, and noticing that they have a coupon for a discount on skiing.

The next morning you finally go to the snowy peaks, ready to ski for a while. As you have your fun, you can't help but feel how the atmosphere takes a turn for the dark. There seems to be a problem. You keep going down the slopes, and that's when you notice there's some screaming going on around you: there has been an accident somewhere, and people are trapped! It seems to be that there are fourteen people in total that need to be rescued!

Hurry! Go find them before panic ensues, or much worse, the noise causes an avalanche to bury them!

The Circuit: 7 Sets; up to 2 minutes of rest.
(With each set you complete, you rescue 2 people.)
  • 10 Skiers
  • 10 Climbers
  • 10 Push-ups
  • 10 Skiers
  • 10 Plank Leg Raises
  • 10 Shoulder Taps

You find an abandoned aircraft powered by kinetic energy. It will take push ups to power it up and keep it going. You step inside, make your way towards the Kinetic Energy Cockpit, and immediately begin to do pushups to wake up the plane’s engine.

10 pushups

The engine does nothing. You grab the engine’s handle and lift its heavy weight into the air, several times.

5 kettlebell deadlifts

Finally, the engine starts and the plane soars into the sky. It will take some glute bridges to gain height, and then more pushups to keep the engine running smoothly.

10 glute bridges
10 side bridges
10 pushups

You hear a banging noise from the top of the plane. You open the sunroof and hoist yourself up.

5 kettlebell deadlifts

An elf has landed on the roof, his arms full of gifts, seeming a little scared. “I was on my way to the party with some gifts when a Flying Grinch knocked down my flying sleigh with its snowball launcher - we need to gain height, quick! If you do some bridges the plane will be pushed higher - ”

10 glute bridges
10 side bridges

The Flying Grinch pulls up alongside the plane. It’s little, and purple, with wings. “I’m sorry I knocked down your sleigh,” it squeaks, “I was aiming for my cousin to the left of you. We were having a snowball fight on our way to the party!”

“Oh,” says the elf with relief. “That’s alright… no harm done! Let’s go the rest of the way together! It’ll take some more push ups to power the plane until landing, let’s do it together!”

You drop down into the cockpit accompanied by elf and grinch, and together you keep the plane powered and lower it into a safe landing in the party hangar.

10 pushups
5 kettlebell deadlifts
10 glute bridges
10 side bridges

You jump down, landing lightly

20 bounces

... and the elf and grinch and human run to join the party!

Your workout: 3 sets of:
  • 10 pushups
  • 5 kettlebell deadlifts
  • 10 glute bridges
  • 10 side bridges
Finisher: 20 bounces

Gift for @Laura Rainbow Dragon :

Dear Laura Rainbow Dragon,

You are cordially invited to the Darebee Christmas Gala. This year, we have use of a magical pocket dimension, so we need you to follow these very important steps to generate the portal to get there. Please join us as soon as you are able to take full advantage of this amazing place.

P.S. – Bring Shelby. There will be plenty of new friends for her to meet!

To open a portal, repeat the circuit 4 times, turning a quarter turn with each iteration:

20 Arm raises
20 Leg swings
20 Uppercuts
20 March steps

Upon completing the ritual, Laura Rainbow Dragon and Shelby are transported immediately into the pocket dimension, but not to the party venue! Looking around, they appear to be in a cave. A small pop and an elf wearing a white sweater, twinkling in rainbow lights appears.

He looks around and says, “Oh no, another malfunction. Well, I am afraid that you are going to have to traverse the cave system. Sorry about this! Just keep taking the right tunnel, but mind your head.

To escape the cave, repeat the circuit 3 times:

20-count Plank hold
20-count (per-leg) One leg plank hold
20 Flutter kicks
20 Crunches

Laura Rainbow Dragon and Shelby escape the cave to find the same elf on the other side. He jumps up off the rock he was sitting on upon seeing them.

“Oh I am so glad that you made it out of the cave!” His black curls tremble with his barely contained excitement. He gestures towards the thick rainforest leaves that overhang the path ahead. “You just need to follow the path through the brush and you will be at the party.”

To pass through the overgrown rainforest path, repeat the circuit 3 times:

20 Overhead punches
20 Archer lunges
20 Lunge punches

As you draw closer, the sound of holiday music becomes louder.

Upon reaching the other side, Laura Rainbow Dragon and Shelby found their way to the Darebee gala, where Shelby got all the good-girl scritches and Laura Rainbow Dragon danced the night away with the other Bees!

Finisher: Dance for as long as you want!

Gift for @Maegaranthelas :

Dear Maegaranthelas, you are travelling to a magical land for the DAREBEE Great Getaway Gala with a whole Capybara family. When you found the capybaras they were sad, confined in a zoo. But they broke out of their enclosure and begged you to take them with you on your adventure.

You really hope you will be able to leave the capybaras in this wonderful place you are travelling to, and that they will be happy there. The issue is that some villains are wishing to capture them and make them their pets (or eat them?). You will have to fight hard to save them!

For each capybara you want to save 3, 4 or 5, do one set of the following:
  1. A griffin attacks you! Fight!: 1 minute of punches
  2. A gnome tries to capture you. Escape!: 30 seconds of squats
  3. Now you need to run as far as you can because Cooper is following you, and the villains will be able to find his fluff too easily and track you all: 1 minute high knees or march steps
  4. You are in the woods now. You need to hide! Make like a tree: 30 seconds tree pose on each leg
  5. You start moving again but hear something nearby. It sounds dangerous! Hide again by bending over: 30 seconds toe touches
  6. The gnome appears again. Escape with: 30 seconds of squats
  7. You are facing several barriers with moats in between. You will have to use burpees to get past them all: 10 seconds burpees (with push-ups if you want to save your sweatshirt)
  8. Now a Basilisk is in front of you and it seems she wants to eat one or two capybaras for lunch. Fight again!: 1 minute kicks and knee strikes
  9. Finally you reach your destination. You decide the best place to leave your new friends is at a mountain lake surrounded by dense vegetation. But you are at the bottom of the mountain. Since this is a magical land, the easiest way to get to the capybaras' new home is to fly to the top: 30 seconds of superwomans
Phew! With the capybara family safely installed in their new home you travel back down the mountain and join all your DAREBEE friends at the party.

Gift for @Matan :

"Man, what a year," you think to yourself, as you listen to the rain gently plop against the top of the ship. See, you're currently on a cruise ship, specifically the Kissed by the Iron Fist, and it's stormin' out there. It's not a bad storm by any means, you know you're safe, but that noise-- The rain against the metal-- You find it... Comforting. And you wish to soak up this moment, and be fully within it.

STEP ONE - MEDITATION. FIVE MINUTES OF IT, BUT IF YOU WANNA DO MORE? DO IT.

Eventually though, the rain stops, and the glorious sun evaporates the water from the deck. And as the sun begins to fall asleep, you hear an announcement - "ALL WHO WISH TO DO SUNSET YOGA, PLEASE GO UP TO THE DECK." And you figure, why not? Sunset yoga is just... Yoga during the sunset, nothing too hard there, yeah?

STEP TWO - YOGA. HOLD EACH POSE FOR THIRTY SECONDS. BREAKS IN BETWEEN IF NEEDED ARE FINE. I GOTCHU.

- Hero
- Goddess
- Mountain
- Warrior 1
- Warrior 2
- Sun warrior

Phew! You feel great now, don't you? Full of energy! You hear that you'll make landfall tomorrow, so go and rest back in your cabin. ... Just, get there first?

STEP THREE WITH CHOICES - TWO SETS OF MARCH STEPS GOING FOR TWO MINUTES EACH, ONE MINUTE BREAK IN BETWEEN. OR DO MARCH STEPS TO THIS SONG SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE SOMETHING ABOUT IT MAKES ME WANT TO DO MARCH STEPS AND I DO NOT KNOW WHY. ANOTHER CHOICE IS GO FOR A NICE WALK SOMEWHERE AND TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING NICE YOU SAW ON THE WAY
:D

...

Hey, you, you're finally awake. Yeah, landfall is happening, and now everyone is leaving the ship to go to the island. So grab your bags-- They're on the floor, so pick 'em up!

STEP FOUR - Ten squats! And if your knees are feeling okay, do a few more sets :hheart:

Aaaalright, bags are grabbed and you're ready to go. It's a beautiful day, and so you decide to take a nice walk around the island. Eventually, you decide to rest under a coconut tree- ... ... Hold on. What's-- Something is stuck in the tree. What on God's green earth is it? Wait-- It IS green! Is that an Emerald Sword, like they've sung about in the sagas? You look around, wondering if anyone else sees what's going on, because there's no way this is happening. ... Well, no one else seems to be paying attention, so, go get that sword!

STEP FIVE - THREE SETS OF TWENTY STEP JACKS, TAKE A MINUTE BREAK IN BETWEEN 'EM.

GOOD LORD DUDE. YOU HAVE AN EMERALD SWORD NOW. You find the sheath nearby, half-buried in the sand. Conveniently you're able to strap it to your belt, and you feel like an absolute GOD. You feel so inspired that your energy is almost out of control! What are you gonna do with that energy!?

STEP SIX - Three sets of the following - Ten shoulder taps, ten side bends, feel free to do a minute in between.

Damn, dude, save some awesomeness for the rest of us. You're making all of our hearts catch fire! Unsheathing the Emerald Sword, you look at the blade and catch your reflection. You can't help but grin, since man, you look and feel like a super cool hero right now. Just be sure to sheath it before you party with everyone.

STEP SEVEN - Look in the mirror for at least a minute, and give yourself some affirmations. Some affirmations you can use - "My friends love me," "I can bravely face the day," "I am deserving of love."

And there ya go. You deserve to have a break, buddy. Go get some rest and play some X-Plane.

Gift for @NancyTree :

It’s been a year, hasn’t it?

You sigh when you realize this isn’t the first time you’ve had this thought. Life just keeps throwing curve balls. And you? You figure out how to adjust. You roll with the punches, duck and cover, fight back. Whatever it takes.

But this year was a struggle. You got lost in the fight for a bit there, sometimes forgetting the things you need to do to look after you, the things that make you happy. But you learned a lot. And now you’re back on track and looking forward to the Dare Bees’ annual December Holiday Party.

Last year’s party was a blast! The Hive’s tree looked so beautiful with all of the wonderful decorations the Bees worked so hard to create, and although everything everywhere was covered in snow thanks to the huge snow ball fight you all got into, the Hive itself was warm and comfy, filled with the company of good friends and the smells and tastes of delicious food from all over the world. You are very much looking forward to a repeat performance.

A fierce winter wind rages outside the Hive, so fierce you feel it even within the Hive’s sheltered honeycomb walls. That wind is coming in through the Hive’s open door and kicking up an indoor storm of small bits of coloured paper. You quickly duck into a honeycomb out of the way. (Paper cuts are no fun!)

You’re trying to figure out what to do about the indoor storm when the flurry of flying papers ceases as quickly as it began. Cautiously, you poke your head out of your honeycomb hideaway to look around.

Everything appears safe. All around you you see other Bees, also poking their faces out of cells in the honeycomb, then cautiously stepping back out into the main aisle. You do the same, smiling and waving hello to your friends.

The rich, sweet scent of wildflower honey is all around you, and your friends’ faces are sticky with the sweet treat from hiding in the honeycomb cells. You realize that yours must be too and take a sample lick of your lips.

Yep. Delicious! But what’s this?

One of the coloured pieces of paper has fallen at your feet. It is gold and green and blue, reminding you of warmer times spent hiking through a field of wildflowers with a blue sky overhead. You love the camaraderie and feasting of winter holiday celebrations, the community coming together to brave winter’s chill together. But those warm days of summer sunshine sure are nice too!

You notice something is written on the piece of paper at your feet and bend down for a closer look. It’s your name! The paper is a notecard, addressed to you.
You pick up the card and flip it over to read the message on its other side:

“Dear NancyTree,
You are cordially invited to attend the Dare Bees’ annual December Holiday Party! For this year’s party, the Bees have decided to stage a grand getaway to the Hallowed Honey Heartland.”

The Hallowed Honey Heartland? This is different! And interesting. You’ve been been wanting to make an effort to visit more awesome and interesting places. So you read on:

“The Hallowed Honey Heartland is a wonderful, magical land, where the sun always shines, and colours are vibrant and bright. (Unless you prefer shade and muted colours, in which case there is a shade tree that follows you wherever you buzz, and you see only calming, subtle colours--this is a magical land, after all!) In this land the sweetest, most-nourishing nectar drips effortlessly out of giant flowers, flowing freely like rain (and magically tastes like whatever you want it to taste like).”

Wow! The Hallowed Honey Heartland sounds like an awesome place for sure! And all of your Bee friends are going to be there. You’re in!
But wait. There’s more:

“Unfortunately, the way to the Hallowed Honey Heartland is rife with unknown dangers. It would not be safe for all of the Bees to travel there en masse, drawing attention to ourselves, before we know what we’ll be dealing with out there.”

That seems like a sensible precaution, you think. Then you read on:

“What we need, dear NancyTree, is someone to scout the way for us, then report back to the Hive on how best we might all make the journey to the Hallowed Honey Heartland together. Since you are fleet of foot, and one of the best photographers in the Hive, you have been chosen to fulfil this role. Do you accept?”

You look up from the notecard. All around you other Bees are signing their own RSVPs to the party invitations, some with looks of confidence on their honey-sticky faces, others with fear, still others with mirth. (You wonder at what mission their holiday party invitation might contain!) No matter what reaction your fellow Bees might have had to whatever mission was asked of them, everyone is signing their RSVP cards. You’re all in this together.

You sign your own card and drop it off in the Hive mailbox. Then you grab your camera and head out on your mission, starting off at a good clip. The sooner you can scout a safe path to the Hallowed Honey Heartland, the sooner all the Bees can get there, and your holiday party can begin!

Part I: Get outside and go for a hike with your camera. Or go for a run. BONUS: Do both!
#

Your travels begin on a lovely country path. The air is brisk, and the fields are brown this late in the year. But the sky is blue, and the winter sun is warm on your face, reminding you that all of those brown seeds the wind is scattering across the land will soon be transformed into beautiful, fragrant flowers come the spring.

The first part of your journey to the Hallowed Honey Heartland is so peaceful you wonder what all the fuss about “unknown dangers” mentioned in your party invitation was all about. You take a few snapshots of the bucolic scenery to show your fellow Bees back in the Hive there is nothing to fear out here.

You’re about to put your camera back in its bag and continue on your way when you hear music.

Music? Out here in the middle of nowhere? It’s a bit unusual. But not too concerning. Still: you are intrigued. So you follow the sound.

Presently, you spot something up ahead: a fallow clearing in the field in which a tiny man sits at a tiny piano, playing a haunting and ethereal tune. Beside him, a tiny woman strums the same tune on a tiny, delicate harp, and beside her, another tiny person accompanies them on the tiniest of tiny piccolo flutes. Your breath catches in your throat as one-by-one more of the tiny people enter the clearing, stepping out of the surrounding wildflower field with their voices raised in song.

You crouch down low amongst the dry and withered flower stalks, trying to be as quiet as you can. These are Faeries, you realize. They must be! To be so small, so comfortable out in nature (though they wear nothing but light, flowing garments in the blistery winter air), and so talented with their music, raising a powerful sound with such tiny instruments.

Are these the unknown dangers your fellow Bees were worried about? Faeries can be tricksters, certainly. But these ones seem harmless enough. And the pianist! Such skill in his tiny fingers! You are certain he could teach you a thing or two, perhaps help you spice up the performance you were planning to give at the Bees’ holiday party.

You’re about to stand up to go and introduce yourself to the Faeries when a dark shadow passes overhead. Fearing the shadow’s presence, you duck down low amongst the flower stalks once again.

The shadow, you realize, was heading straight for the Faeries’ clearing. You start to rise once again, to try to see what is going on, but another dark shadow sends you ducking back for cover.

This pattern continues for several seconds. Each time you start to rise, another dark form appears overhead, eerie and ominous, sending shivers up your spine and causing you to sink back low, hiding in the meadow grasses.

Part II-a: 15 seconds lower half squats.

Suddenly, the Faeries’ music stops. You hear the most blood-curdling of screams, and then all hell breaks loose. The Faeries are under attack!

You cannot help yourself. You realize now that the Bees who sent you out on this mission had been correct: The danger out here is very real. But the Faeries weren’t harming anyone. They were simply making beautiful music. The dark shadows attacked them for no reason at all! And this you cannot countenance! So you rise from your hiding spot and rush in to join the fray.

The Faeries, though tiny, are fierce. They fight the monsters bravely. But they are outnumbered. And the monsters are much larger than the Faeries: dark, amorphous shadows, that billow and undulate and attack their smaller prey from all sides.

This is not a problem. You know how to attack from all sides too! You charge into the clearing and begin to beat the monsters back with rapid and powerful side-to-side kicks.

Part II-b: 15 seconds side-to-side side kicks.
The monsters howl with rage. They thought they had found easy prey in the choir of little people. But your joining the fight has made a real difference! The monsters cannot countenance this. So they call on reinforcements of their own! Brown, scaly creatures, each with six eyes and eight pincer-like claws, begin to crawl up out of the earth, and giant, green, winged creatures with three heads a piece descend down from the heavens screeching, their giant maws open wide to reveal four rows of very, very sharp teeth.

You’re going to need to find a way to take things up a notch yourself! You launch into a furious series of burpees with jumps, kicking the monsters behind you as you jump back, and punching monsters overhead as you jump up.

Part II-c: 15 seconds burpees with jumps.
The fight continues. You’re exhausted. But you’re in this now. There’s no turning back!

You battle on bravely beside your Faerie comrades. But just as you’re jumping into the air to punch one of the many-fanged flying monsters, one of the dark amorphous monsters smashes into your side, knocking you to the ground.

“Ooph!” The wind is knocked out of you. And now you’re lying sprawled in the dirt. Is this the end?

“Yo! Human! Catch!”

You turn to the sound of the voice just in time to see the tiny pianist tossing one of the foot pedals from his by now ruined piano your way.

You’re down, but not out! You sit up in time to expertly catch the pedal and use it to continue fighting the monsters on the ground in a powerful frenzy of seated twists.

Part II-d: 15 seconds seated twists.
Math in a Minute - Round One:

N = # of kicks + # of burpees + # of twists
Total HIIT Points = N
1 HIIT Point saves 1 Faery.
There are 30 Faeries.
Try to save them all!

The battle rages on for several long, intense moments. But the monsters soon discover that the Faeries, with you as their champion, are stronger than they had thought. The Faeries’ have taken some hits. But the monsters are taking more damage. They realize this is a battle they are not going to win. So with one final blood-curdling shriek, the dark amorphous monsters dissipate into thin air, the brown, scaly creatures burrow back into the dirt, and the giant, green, winged beasts beat a hasty retreat up into the clouds from whence they came. The battle is over.

You take a long, slow, deep breath. Then you stagger to your feet, brushing the dirt and multi-hued bodily secretions off of your clothing. (Is the red stuff your blood? It doesn’t matter. You’re alive!)

All around you the battered and bruised Faeries are also taking stock of their own injuries and ruined instruments.

“You fought bravely, Human,” says the piano player.

“Thank you,” you reply. “You fought bravely yourselves.”

“It is necessary to be brave to survive in these parts,” says the harpist. “Sadly, our concert appears to be over.” She looks around at the tattered strings of her harp, the splintered piano, and the flautist’s smashed piccolo. “Perhaps we might join you in your travels?”

You are honoured that the Faeries would ask to join you. And you have seen that they are fierce warriors, just as you are. Their numbers may be an asset to you as you continue on your perilous journey to the Hallowed Honey Heartland. So you accept the Faeries’ offer and continue on your journey with your new friends by your side. Along the way, they begin to teach you the first bars of their haunting, ethereal song.

"Striving to be the change."
Gift for @NancyTree - Part II:

As you continue on your way, the fields of tall grasses and spent wildflowers soon give way to craggy rocks, at first with a few brave stubby bushes forcing their roots down between cracks in the rock. Then there’s nothing but great sheets of hard dolomite, set at odd angles to one another, each one a foot, two, sometimes three feet higher than the one before. Like a mad giant’s staircase.

As you climb up the rocky terrain you spot a strange sight up ahead: a whole mess of the brown scaly creatures you fought earlier are running about on a flat sheet of rock. But these creatures, unlike the earlier ones you encountered, do not appear to be aggressive. In fact, they appear to be creating some sort of art installation, assembling tiny grains of sand of different colours into a picture, like a giant Ministeck.

You crouch down low so as not to disturb the creatures in their work.

"What is it?" asks the Faery pianist at your side. "What do you see?"

"Look." You point.

The pianist climbs up to take a look.

"Sand Scrabblers!" he shouts. "Attack!"

"No! Wait!" You grab the Faeries, one-by-one, and pull them back down.

Part II-a: 15 seconds lower half squats.
"Those Sand Scrabblers aren't arming anyone," you say. "They're making art!"

The Faeries take another look at the Sand Scrabblers and grudgingly accept your assessment of the situation. You're all crouched down on the rocks, watching the Sand Scrabblers' picture take shape, when the sky darkens overhead. It's a whole gang of the dark, amorphous shadows, come to attack the Sand Scrabblers!

"We have to help them!" you say.

"But they're Sand Scrabblers," says the Faery flautist.

"So what?" you say. "They weren't harming anyone. They were creating art. And now they're under attack!"

"This Human isn't one of us. Yet she helped us when we were under attack," says the Faery harpist.

The other Faeries see her point, and they join you in the fight to save the Sand Scrabblers.

Part II-b: 15 seconds side-to-side side kicks.
Part II-c: 15 seconds burpees with jumps.
Part II-d: 15 seconds seated twists.

Math in a Minute - Round Two:

N = # of kicks + # of burpees + # of twists
F = # of Faeries you saved (max 30)
The Faeries are much smaller than you, so their hits are 1/10 as strong as yours.
Total HIIT Points = N + N(F/10)
3 HIIT Points save 1 Sand Scrabbler
There are 40 Sand Scrabblers.
Try to save them all!

The battle is once again intense. But with your Faery friends by your side you are able to drive off the dark amorphous shadows.

The Sand Scrabblers you saved are grateful for your assistance. But their sand mosaic, sadly, was destroyed in the fight. They ask if they can join you and the Faeries on your journey.

#

As you continue on your way with the Faeries and Sand Scrabblers, one of the Sand Scrabblers explains to you their process for painstakingly sorting tiny grains of sand into different colours to make their art. Meanwhile, the Faery choir begins to teach the others their song.

Presently your journey takes you into a forest that is lush and green and thick with undergrowth. There is a clear path through the forest however, which you take. Your new friends are all following you on this path when you spot another strange sight up ahead: a couple dozen of the giant, green, three-headed winged creatures are flying back and forth between the trees crocheting an intricate pattern with silk threads they are spinning from their own bodies.

"Winged Cerberons!" shouts one of the Sand Scrabblers.

"Attack!" shouts the Faery pianist, jumping up.

"No!" You pull him (and the other agitated Faeries) back down.

Part II-a: 15 seconds lower half squats.
"Those Winged Cerberons aren't hurting anyone," you say. "Look at the beautiful pattern they are weaving between the tree branches with their silk."

It takes some doing, but eventually the Faeries and Sand Scrabblers all settle down to watch the Winged Cerberons with you.

Everything is going well. But then, suddenly, a mob of the dark amorphous shadows is on top of the Winged Cerberons. With the thick forest canopy blocking out the sunlight overhead, you'd not noticed their approach. There's no time to lose!

"We've got to help the Cerberons!" you shout, rushing into battle.

The Faeries and the Sand Scrabblers join you.

Part II-b: 15 seconds side-to-side side kicks.
Part II-c: 15 seconds burpees with jumps.
Part II-d: 15 seconds seated twists.

Math in a Minute - Round Three:

N = # of kicks + # of burpees + # of twists
F = # of Faeries you saved (max 30)
SS = # of Sand Scrabblers you saved (max 40)
The Faeries are much smaller than you, so their hits are 1/10 as strong as yours.
The Sand Scrabblers are strong, but they cannot fly or jump. In an overhead battle, their hits are 1/10 as effective as yours.
Total HIIT Points = N + N(F/10) + N(SS/10)
10 HIIT Points save 1 Winged Cerberon
There are 24 Winged Cerberons.
Try to save them all!

After another intense battle you and your new friends once again vanquish the dark amorphous shadows, who disappear into the depths of the forest as quickly as they had appeared. The Winged Cerberons, grateful for your assistance, but saddened by the destruction of their silk weaving, ask to join you.

#

You have amassed quite an entourage now as your journey takes you out of the forest and onto a snow-covered plane. The air here is crisp and cold, but overhead the sun is shining once again. You're a bit tired, but your spirits are buoyed up by all of your new friends, and you're hopeful of reaching the Hallowed Honey Heartland soon.

But then...

... oh, no! Up ahead, one of the dark, amorphous shadows is flying this way and that over the snow, creating winds with its movements.

"It's a Phantasm!" shrieks one of the Winged Cerberons.

"We've got to kill it before it kills us!" shouts a Sand Scrabbler.

"Attack!" shouts the Faery pianist.

"No! Wait!" Once again, you pull your friends back down from their hasty battle plans.

Part II-a: 15 seconds lower half squats.
"That Phantasm isn't hurting anyone," you point out.

The Faeries, Sand Scrabblers, and Winged Cerberons all take a second look.

The Phantasm is indeed doing no one any harm. It is merely using the winds created by its flight to trace patterns in the snow.

Cautiously, you and your friends inch closer to the Phantasm. You see that it is in fact drawing a picture in the snow. It is a picture of many different creatures: Humans, Faeries, Sand Scrabblers, Winged Cerberons, Phantasms, and more creatures you've never seen the likes of, all living together in harmony.

You are about to introduce yourself to the Phantasm and express your delight in its work when the sky darkens overhead and a massive horde of Phantasms fly in and attack the Phantasm creating the picture.

"We've got to--" you begin.

"Help him!" shout your new friends.

Part II-b: 15 seconds side-to-side side kicks.
Part II-c: 15 seconds burpees with jumps.
Part II-d: 15 seconds seated twists.

Math in a Minute - Round Four:

N = # of kicks + # of burpees + # of twists
F = # of Faeries you saved (max 30)
SS = # of Sand Scrabblers you saved (max 40)
WC = # of Wing Cerberons you saved (max 24)
The Faeries are much smaller than you, so their hits are 1/10 as strong as yours.
The Sand Scrabblers are strong, but they cannot fly or jump. In an overhead battle, their hits are 1/10 as effective as yours.
The Winged Cerberons are fierce fighters. But their three heads sometimes make coordinating their attacks difficult. Their hits are 1/2 as effective as yours.
Total HIIT Points = N + N(F/10) + N(SS/10) + N(WC/2)
There is only 1 Phantasm under attack. But a lot of its kin are attacking it.
You will need 600 HIIT Points to save the Phantasm!
Can you do it?

After yet another fierce battle, you and your friends manage to drive off the attacking Phantasms. The Phantasm that you saved (yes, I have faith that you managed to save it!) is so grateful for the rescue and asks to join your party.

#

By this point you and your friends are all getting mighty tired. But the gates to the Hallowed Honey Heartland are in sight. You're almost there!

But then...

A thunderbolt hits the ground right in front of the gates to the Hallowed Honey Heartland. When the smoke clears, a ginormous monster the likes of which you have never even dreamed of unfurls into a hideous mass of flailing spikes and tentacles and wings and clawed feet. The thing is bigger than a house. And it is not making art.

You crouch down behind a shrub, pulling your new friends down with you.

Part II-a: 15 seconds lower half squats.
"What," you say, "is that?!"

"That," says your new Phantasm friend, "is the BoaB." It billows and undulates, morphing almost into nothingness in its fear.

"What is a BoaB?"

"It's the Boss of all Bosses."

"Do we fight it?" asked the Faery pianist.

Just then the BoaB opens its hideous mouth. It's "teeth" are chainsaws and axes and double-edged swords. And the BoaB has seen you. It charges.

"Attack!" you shout.

Part II-b: 15 seconds side-to-side side kicks.
Part II-c: 15 seconds burpees with jumps.
Part II-d: 15 seconds seated twists.

Math in a Minute - Round Five:

N = # of kicks + # of burpees + # of twists
F = # of Faeries you saved (max 30)
SS = # of Sand Scrabblers you saved (max 40)
WC = # of Wing Cerberons you saved (max 24)
P = # of Phantasms you saved (max 1)
Total HIIT Points = N + N(F/10) + N(SS/10) + N(WC/2) + N(P)
You need 735 HIIT Points to defeat the Boss of all Bosses
Go for it!

P.S.: You can do a 6th round if you need it to defeat the BoaB. But I think you and your friends can dispatch it in round five.

#

Phew!

That was intense. But you did it. You made it to the Hallowed Honey Heartland!

Your new friends are all eager to enter the HHH for some much needed R&R. But you explain to them that you must first return to the Hive to fetch the rest of the DAREBEES.

Your new friends immediately insist that they will accompany you. Just in case.

You are much relieved. Because you've already been through the ringer today, and there is safety in numbers.

The journey back to the Hive, however, is peaceful. You encounter nothing more exciting than a beautiful cherry tree, full of luscious, ripe fruit. You decide to pick some, to make a black forest cake for the DAREBEE party.

Calm and balanced, you reach one arm towards the tree to pick a cherry.

Part III-a: Exhale into Warrior II.
Alas! Just as your fingers brush against the fruit, a flame-red bird swoops in and steals it from your grasp. You look up, watching the bird fly away with your cherry.

Part III-b: Inhale into Sun Warrior.
"You greedy bird!" you shout.

Then the bird drops the cherry. Right at your feet. You bend down to pick it up.

Part III-c: Exhale into Triangle Pose.
You pick the cherry up and place it into the basked the Winged Cerberons have just woven for you.

Part III-d: Inhale into Star Pose.
Then you notice another cherry tree on the other side of you. You reach to pluck a cherry from this tree. But--of course--the bird comes back!

Continue the sequence, alternating sides, until you have picked enough cherries to make your black forest cake.

Finally... FINALLY... you make it back to the Hive. Everyone is happy to see you back in one piece--especially Pico, who tried really hard to be chill about moving house, but your being gone for so long battling monsters had her worried!

"The way to the Hallowed Honey Heartland is clear!" you announce. "Let's go party!"

All the Bees are of course thrilled with your work and hail you as their hero. Pico, unwilling to be left behind again, tags along, refusing to let you out of her sight as she surreptitiously checks out your new friends. You regale everyone with the story of your adventures as you all journey together to the Great Getaway Gala for a well-deserved Party of all Parties.

Gift for @neilarey :

Dear Neila,

Intro

It’s been a year, right?
You kept your schedule tight

To give your bees a dare
And a bit of care

For that you have deserved a gift
To give your spirit a lift

The entrance to an enchanted ball
Just to get away from it all

Not only for yourself to enjoy
But also for Ollie and Bennie-boy

You get a ticket to go
And a map to show

Just read the map very well
Then also discover the proper spell

In the end you’ll be enjoying the night
Under the magical holiday light

Part 1: the Map

Close your eyes, to see the world of dreams
Where nothing is quite as it seems

The start is at the dark, thick woods
Be careful of the trapping roots

As scary as it seems to be
It’s full of glitter on every tree

The fairies try to keep it safe
So now you have to stand, be brave

They’ll test your skill, your truth of heart
If you’re worthy, you might take part

>> 5x Combo 20x High knees (roots) and 10x Squats (branches) <<

After a while you find a lake
There’s a hidden path you have to take

A leap of faith is what you need
For then for sure you will succeed

>> 5x 10 Lunges (stepping stones) <<

You blindly walk and feel some ground
You pause to take a look around

In the water there’s a gorgeous sight
Fish in all colours shown by the light

Your babies suddenly start to patter
What’s that, what is the matter?

You see a squirrel sends you a wink
Was that true, you dare to think

It hops around, does it again
No moments lost, you follow it then

Part 2: the Key

It brings you to a rosebush gate
Now it’s time, to show your fate

You get three chances, to find the key
Roll the dice, to set it free

>> 3x Daredice roll, do 3 sets of every outcome. <<

Have you found now your true luck?
Or will you stay here, forever stuck?

You try the key to fit the door
But you have to do a little more

A bit of charm, a bit of Sweet
It will make the key complete

You think it over, what’s the word
Is it something you already heard?

Shall I help you, asks the deer
It’s after all that time of the year

You have to know the spell is true
You’ll find it deep inside of you

It is a wish, for all the Hive
To be Brave enough to thrive

You try to feel, what does it say?
What comes from the heart of Neila Rey?

And then you clearly start to see
The answer is: ‘Dare to Be(e)!’

Part 3: the Party

The road was long, the path was rough
But you Neila, you are tough

You found the secret hide away
To celebrate the magical holiday!

And best of all you’re not alone
To all the hive, the path was shown

Not only your babies came today
All hive’s furry friends found the way!

Have fun, go dance, just let it flow!
In the perfect moonlight glow

>> play ‘A kind of Magic’ by Queen<< (or any other song that fits your merry mood)

>> Circuit combo’s 5x Side jacks (each side), 5x jumping jacks (with claps), 5x front punches (each side), 5x Side-to-Side hops (each side) until music stops <<

OR

>> Free Dancing <<

With Christmas love,

Your Secret Santa

Dear Princess Sarena,

You are on your way to a gala organized by your friends in the DAREBEE Hive. Since this isn't your first time attending a DAREBEE gala, you expect the trip to be easy. Sure enough, you arrive smoothly, unlike some other invitees who were worried about the journey. However, your excitement fades when you discover that your friends organizing the gala are dealing with last-minute setup problems, including miscommunication with decorators and venue staff.

Realizing that the venue needs some energy to come alive, you roll up your sleeves to help, doing some arm scissors. Once you finish, the decorations are magically set up beautifully on their own and the whole place looks fabulous.

As the other guests begin to arrive, the venue fills up quickly. However, it becomes clear that more staff is needed to handle the event. Without a big influx of staff in a big hurry, the guest experience will be negatively impacted. To help out, you start doing squats and presses. These summon a group of concierges who are ready to assist the guests.

As the evening continues, you notice several hiccups, including food delays, incorrect orders, and guests with dietary restrictions. Not wanting your friends to lose face, you step in to help resolve these issues. You run errands and tackle every problem you encounter. By doing high knees, a line of waiters magically appears, bringing out the most delicious food and drinks, much to everyone’s delight.

Some guests have had too much to drink and feel unwell, while another has sustained an injury. They require immediate attention. Though you can’t run fast enough while carrying them to get them to a hospital, you make them as comfortable as possible. You march in place, and a stunning hospital materializes where you are, complete with doctors and nurses that look like they stepped out of a magazine.

Since the gala is outdoors, unexpected high winds disrupt the event. To shield everyone from the strong winds, you do a few burpees to draw down a magical transparent dome, big enough to cover the entire venue. Then you lay down and do plank rolls to seal the dome into place.

Finally the gala draws to a close. Thanks to your hard work, everyone had a great time! Your friends pat you on the back for saving the night, and you are rewarded with the most delicious drink you've ever tasted!

Here are your exercises. Complete them in seven sets:

20 arm scissors
10 squat and press
10 sec high knees
20 sec march steps
4 burpees
10 plank rolls

The Most Adventurous of Them All

It had been a long and hard year in Southern Ontario, and Saffity really, really needed a vacation! Carrying her little Bees up and down, rocking them to sleep, chasing them around the house, starting a new job, and all the other challenges that life threw at her could not be managed just with micro workouts and a standing desk. This year she really needed to get away from it all!

But of course, going away needs more than wishful thinking… or does it? Hmmm… the Hive is a magical place after all, and when the Bees decide that magic can happen, then by all means it will happen! Saffity read about a magical Hive-land where fevers did not exist, everyone slept through the night, and lots of deliciously healthy food dripped from trees. This was her destination for sure! And how could she get there? By building a rainbow road, of course! That way she could take her little Bees with her, and all the other Bees of the Hive could use the rainbow to go on vacation too.

To build a rainbow road one doesn’t need bricks and mortar, but a song, a dance, some sprinkles, and just putting one foot in front of the other! So Saffity went to work:

20 march steps
10 bridges – hold long enough for a little Bee to crawl under
20 side leg raises
20 butt kicks
10 baby squats – every time you go down you need to high-five Munchie and Biggie
20 back leg raises

Filler: In between each exercise you need to dance one round of the Macarena with Munchie and Biggie

3 sets=level 1
5 sets=level 2
7 sets=level 3

The more sets done, the bigger the rainbow road and the more Bees will be able to use it to travel to the magical Hive-land. Go for the max!

With the help of her little Bees Saffity enjoyed her rainbow road building activities and suddenly it was there! She could already see the magical Hive-land shimmering at the end of her rainbow!

It’s party time! Let all the Bees dance the Macarena!

Gift for @Sólveig :

A Christmas dance contest was announced in the Hive, and a little Bee decided to participate, because she always wanted to learn to pole dance.

As she watched others dancing on the pole, she realized that she had to prepare herself to stay on the pole. After searching for a while she found some exercises that would help her to dance. Bee started practicing hard and slowly she got the hang of it. At first she did the basic moves in dancing, but then it got harder and harder.

Whether this Bee can win depends on you, whether you will regularly help her with exercises or not. You need a strong back (do 30 W-extensions, 30 prone reverse flys and 30 reverse angels), strong arms and abs (do 50 climbers, 50 punches and 33 burpees--11 with classic push-ups, 11 with push-ups with rotations, and 11 with clap push-ups), as well as agility and balance in your legs (do a 20-count alt arm/leg plank hold, 20 alt arm/leg raises and a 20-count side star plank hold).

We hope that the little Bee, with your help, will succeed and you will be able to show everyone a great pole dance and take first place!

Gift for @Syrius :

You’re the Chosen One. In your hands is a precious map that will take you to the Gala where all the other Bees will be partying. The journey will be quick but, unfortunately there are a couple of snags. The first one is that there is no travelling alone anymore. Way too dangerous given the state of the world’s highways these days. Mists, spells, mischiefs and sprites add up to potent threats but there are also the risks of Highway Bandits that will relieve you of your soul (souls go for a lot in the Silk Road Underground these days).

So, you must definitely take your three companions to act as your eyes and ears. Orion, given his name, must take point. Apollo to the rear for he’s fleet of response. And, obviously, Erebus, will be your wing-kitten; by your side. Each has been given special powers for the journey: Orion always sees danger so you will never be surprised. Apollo grants you speed but his power is activated by ten squats every time. Erebus makes you stronger, but for that you must do five push-ups every time you rely on his amazing fighting prowess.

As for you, you need to tool up: Katana is a must. But you will also need your dumbbells, we intend to move some weight. The first obstacle in your path is an easy one: A dense forest blocks the way (Highways these days are barely maintained). Clear a path with your Katana by doing 100 cross cuts.

With that accomplished you’re now good to go. You’re on your bike and pedaling fast for at least 5 mins when Orion tells you that there’s a mischief ahead. This one’s relatively harmless as these spirits go (because the map you hold, despite the difficulties, is taking you through the swiftest, safest path possible). It increases gravity by ten fold. A localized ten-fold increase in the planet’s gravity well is nothing for your feline companions but you need to get past it by lifting some weights. Once past that your road is clear. Well, kind of.

It turns out there is a group of bandits ahead. Orion spots them long before you see them and alerts you so you meet them with Katana in hand.

You’ve cleared that obstacle so you’re almost there. Orion (who sees everything) alerts you that there are more bandits in the rear. You decide it’s wiser to run than fight but you need to put distance between them and your party. You do ten squats and Apollo lends you some extra speed.

Phew! You left them in the dust!

One final block to go and thankfully Orion tells you early on that dead ahead are the Aquatics. Terrible, terrible, fluid drinking creatures that guard every waterway on this planet. You need to safely cross the bridge with your companions and get across to the other side but first you must nullify these fluid-drinking creatures. This is pretty much the endgame so you have to give it your all. Your party reaches a long bridge crossing over a broad, fast river. Sure enough what appears to be an entire army of Aquatics is standing there, delicately balancing on the very surface of the fast-flowing water.

Without hesitation you drop down and do five push-ups and Erebus is magically transformed. No longer just a shiny-coated, bright-eyed youthful cat; he becomes a magical creature of pure energy that fuses with you. You feel faster, stronger and more capable than ever before.

When the heady feeling of almost limitless power within you subsides the battle is over. The Aquatics, defeated, slink back into the water and are carried away by the river. Erebus, his power exhausted, transforms back into this glossy-furred little black creature that now needs to be given extra cuddles and lots of love.

With Orion leading the way you all travel across the river where on the other side of the bridge a glowing orb of light hovers over the ground. A tall man in white clothes and a white beard stands in front of it. He is the Guardian of the Gate.

“Welcome,” he says. “Felines pass through here to the great Bee gala.” He points to the massive glowing orb of light behind him. “You, however, will first have to prove yourself worthy human,” he says. “Nothing too arduous though. As a Bee you must be able to at least do 30 squats.”

You almost laugh at how easy this has been. You do 30 squats, the Guardian smiles and nods. You instantly feel kinda fuzzy and warm. The glow of the white orb of light expands and expands until it covers you all. You close your eyes to protect them from its brightness and bring one hand up to shield your face and next time you open them, you; Orion, Apollo and Erebus are all standing in an amazing, colorful, peaceful place.

You feel instantly at home here. In the distance you can see other Bees having fun and interacting with each other. Right in front of you, there is a path, leading directly to them and above that path, stretched across two massive pillars is the largest banner you’ve ever seen.

WELCOME, it says. ENJOY THE PARTY!
