AM- awake before 5am (PST) to the neighbor doggie barking outside our window. She was apparently stuck outside, scared and cold. After she barks over the edge of our bank for 5-10 mins she goes back across the street to her house and huddles on the porch for a while. Meanwhile, Canoe and my husb were awake and unable to sleep. I stayed in bed trying to sleep until 7am, at which point I got up. Right away, I went over to the neighbors’ porch, was able to get a leash around little missy’s neck, and put her into their back yard, where she could go thru their doggie door to the inside.🐶🐾Poor thing was wet and cold….
Outside is a wet, dense cloud, 40 (F) degrees feels like 36🌧️💧

Thank you for helping your neighbour's dog.
:heartsit:

How do people not notice their own dog stuck outside and barking for help?!
It is quite annoying, indeed. However, these folks are elderly, aging in place, and neither of them can move safely, or very fast. And their house is huge, so it takes a LONG time to get to their door. It is usually a non-dog person/helper/someone visiting them who accidentally lets the dogs out (they also have a second one!) by opening a side gate. Or, the little one slips out between legs. I’ve watched it happening for years. I even asked them what they would like me to do with Ellie (the little one) when she is over on our side of the street barking her crazy little head off over the side of our hill. Up until now, I could not get within 10 feet of Ellie without her running away. But, since I started taking their mail over to their porch, this winter, she has allowed me to come closer, sniffed me, and now lets me slip the leash over her head. I’ve done it a second time already, as she escaped again the next day. I’ve always feared she might get hit by a car, as she is often in the street if she is outside their gate. She responds to “go home Ellie,” but only cuz she’s scared. She’s a cute little white Maltese that prolly weights 15 pounds soaking wet. At least Canoe is getting familiar with her scent a little better and will thus be less intimidating to her😜

Could they get a spring-loaded gate that cannot be left open?

That is annoying. And dangerous for the dogs!

I had the same issue at my parents' house. Their yard had a very wide gate, that my father had converted into a double gate that he imagined he would actually be able to open himself. He could not. The double gate was, however, more hassle for other people to close properly. So they neglected to do so. The gas metre was in the backyard. And when a metre reader bothered to come around at all, they inevitably left the gate open. And the freaking lawn crew--who we were paying a pretty penny to to mow the grass--would drive their ride-on mower out of the yard, down the driveway, and straight up onto their truck. Then take off, leaving the gate swinging open in the breeze. (Spoke to them and their boss about this problem multiple times. Got nowhere.) Thankfully I am able-bodied and could just go outside to check the gate before letting the dogs out. But it sounds like your neighbours need a different solution.

AM- awake at 7:15am (PST) after 9 hours of sleep🥳💤
Outside is dark, wet, cloudy and rainy.💦
Yesterday, after my daughter’s visit to husb’s mom, we all had a long convo about mom’s deteriorating cognitive status. Earlier in the day, mom’s neighbor called to report that several neighbors had experienced her disturbing changing behavior, and were quite concerned. My daughter advised starting the process for moving her to memory care, as she sees rapid declination one day to the next with her visits. So, my husb was suitably anxiety ridden over night, and didn’t sleep.😓

AM- awake at 7am (PST) after being horizontal for 9 hours🛌. However, Canoodles was up 3 times in the night, with urgent need to go outside. I attended to this twice and could see his tummy was a problem.😥💩🙊When I was not outside with him, I was conscious and recounting “all my dead,” and some buried memories associated with many of them…💀🪦Interesting process, with the aid of plant medicine; it’s a lot less hurtful. Just wish it was during daylight hours, rather than using valuable sleep time for it😵‍💫

AM- awake at 7am (PST) after 9, yes, NINE! hours of sleep!!🤩💤 Canoe had slithered up onto the bed to nestle between us, just after husb crawled in this morning. Husb had been up most of the night, due to anxiety/planning for his visit to mom’s tomorrow. We are both anticipating a big emotional to-do to move her to memory care. My daughter’s report and recommendation after her visit to mom yesterday, was that we need to move mom asap, as she is less functional each day. This is an unsafe and volatile situation…😰😩

AM- awake at 6:15am (PST) after only 7.5 hours of sleep😩🥱I am not sure if husb got any sleep at all, as he was up several times that I was aware of. He is very anxious about traveling today, due to weather, and not having heard if the admit orders for mom were obtained. He cannot bring her back if they are not prepared to admit her. Besides that, there’s the likely fight with her about the whole idea of moving to memory care. She accuses him of not caring about her, and not knowing her like she thought. It’s very hurtful, regardless of our understanding that dementia causes this behavior…🥺

AM- awake at 7:30am (PST) after only 8 hours of sleep🛌💤. But, it will have to do, cuz I don’t wanna waste any daylight🌞I dreamt about my dad last night. That was not typical for me. He died in 2014, one of a long series of deaths in my family over a two year period. I have rarely had dreams with him being any significant part….🤔
Husb decided that staying with mom until he can move her is the wise course of action. Leaving her alone at this point is not safe, at all. I am encouraging him to go outside and walk often, when his frustration/anxiety start to boil up. It works well.

Hooray for 9 hours of sleep!

My sleep has been crazy lately, and i never used to have any trouble. I am hoping that some of the dietary changes i am looking at will help things get back on an even keel.
This aging thing has me needing way more sleep than in my earlier years. It cuts into the daytime hours so much.
Have you been eating before bed, or just eating bad stuff?

Mostly the latter.
I don't have much trouble falling asleep, but i am consistently waking between 230-430 unable to get back to sleep (no matter what time i go to bed). I am a fairly early riser, but i prefer 500-630!
This time of year, I tend to eat less wholesomely over all mostly out of habit for the holidays. I have put on 4-5 lbs since Oct, eating more sweets than I do the rest of the year. There’s also the stress of my dear mother in law, too😵‍💫. I see Jan as a time to start over, tho, so those things get reined in a bit and the weight comes off again….I hope.
I’ve been waking up in the wee hours, too, these days and struggle to go back to sleep, due to mind spinning about m-i-l…ugh. All the more reason to aim for 9 hours, esp if I’m lifting during my workouts.🏋🏻‍♀️

AM- awake at 7:45am (PST) after 8+ hours of sleep🛌💤
Outside is partly sunny, dry, frozen, 28(F) degrees feels like 22☀️🧊🥶
Husb is coming home today without mom. She has refused again, and wants to die on her property. So, he will be getting some legal advice, so that we are protected as she declines. I wish things could just get settled already. While I understand the need to change and adapt, this constant pivoting of plans that include me at the side is exhausting😩😮‍💨.
