A pretty good month despite some challenges. It was my best month of running for a while, even though I had almost a week off while pet sitting and dealing with vertigo. It was good to get back into some weights training, too.

I don't really have any plans for May - I'll just keep doing what I'm doing for now (Ironborn and building my running base with the Garmin daily suggested workouts), and maybe start training for a race in June. I am going to get back into archery a bit more consistently; I've been training at home since I recovered from a shoulder injury, but once I've built up a bit of endurance I'd like to get back to my club and start shooting proper rounds again.

Whoa, I didn't realise it had been so long since my last check-in!

Life has been a bit messy over the last year, particularly so in the last six months. I've had multiple health issues (including two strained calves, a minor surgery, a stomach infection and an ongoing – and still undiagnosed – health condition) which have meant my training has been a little inconsistent. So, I fell off the check-in bandwagon for a bit.

Since my last post, I did manage to complete some programs (Runner Prime, Recovery, Zen, Zero Hero, Pathfinder +, Totals, and Fit December), and a number of challenges (Wall Push-Ups, Walking, Jump Rope, Get to Bed on Time, 1,000 Calf Raises, Better Legs, Wall-Sit, Better Abs, No Sugar (30 day), No Junk Food (15 day), Epic Legs, Agility, Easy Core, One Minute Cardio, Easy Abs, and 10,000 Punches (with 2kg dumbbells just for funsies). Huh, seeing all that written out makes me realise I did more than I thought.

My focus in the second half of the year was on recovery, mostly because I was feeling unwell around 50% of the time, which made it hard to train consistently. I did lots of walking, and zone 2 running when I was able. I was at least able to be consistent with daily mobility and yoga sessions, which is something I want to take into the new year.

December was okay in terms of health. My health issues seemed less intense than usual, which meant I've been able to build up my zone 2 running to a decent base, and I also started focusing on elevation gain, aiming for 1,000m vert a week (divided between running and walking). It seems to have made my flatter runs a bit faster, which is an added bonus.

2025 Plans
I haven’t really made any plans for this year. I do want to run an ultramarathon later in the year (I'm waiting to see how my health and training progress over the summer/autumn before I lock that one in), plus there are a few shorter trail races I want to do. I’m also considering a 100km ride, because I really want to get into cycling again. My only other real goal is to return to archery. I’ve had too many years off (or only shooting occasionally at home), and I miss it – there’s just something relaxing about spending time on the range.

I'm going to try to check in here more regularly this year - probably not daily like I used to, but I'll aim for a weekly check-in.

Week 1, 2025

Starting off the new year with my old favourite, Ironborn. I'm not following it as it was intended because I want to have Sundays as a rest day, so I'm doing four workouts a week, plus an additional lower body workout aimed at running strength. I'm taking Sundays off from challenges as well (except No Junk Food and No Sugar). I completed No Sugar in November, and it seemed to help with my symptoms (or maybe I was just having a good month), so I'm repeating that one. Having a bit of a sweet-tooth, I doubt it's an option for me long-term - I'm not sure I can give up chocolate - but I think I'll try to at least go low-sugar.

This week was a rest week from running, so I did three 5km runs and my first outdoor ride in months. It felt good to get out on my bike again.

First day back at work! I only take a couple of weeks off a year, and it always goes too fast. (One of the few downsides of self-employment is that I don't get annual leave). I still need to learn to clock off at a reasonable hour; it's easy to get carried away on a projects and lose track of time, which means I run out of time for training.

A good week. I did my longest run in a very long time, which was also my hilliest run in a while (265m vert). I caved on the no sugar challenge because there was cake (and chocolate)! I have zero regrets. I might drop those challenges for now; I'd like to gain a bit of weight and I find that difficult if I only eat 'healthy' foods.
