I had to go out today so everything else was a little squashed. And first thing this morning I realised I needed to do the laundry because I was down to wash-day underwear. Went out a picked up some clothes for the Lad for his birthday. Hey, best I could think of. Also a bag of Caramello Koalas because who doesn't like them! Then I popped into the feed store I've been going to forever. It's closing down! After 77 years (I haven''t been patronising it for that long!) it's no longer going to be there. Now where will I get loose grains? There is a feed store a bit closer to me but it's very commercial-looking, not a large tin shed with sparrows helping themselves to seeds and dust-covered bags of stuff. Sad day. :vsad:

It takes me hours to handwrite six pages but only about forty minutes to type it up. Sometimes I wonder if, when there's a deadline, handwriting isn't going me a disservice. Not that I'm going to stop handwriting, mind you. It has so many benefits. It's just that sometimes I wonder...

Felt so sleepy yesterday that I actually got to bed at a decent time and fell asleep quickly! Unfortunately, at 12:45 I rolled over and faced the door. And I smelt something. Checked - not smoke, no drama. Perhaps it's time to change the bed clothes. Nope, not the bed clothes. Staggered up and into the bathroom. Yep, that cat hadn't bothered to cover her deposit and my phenomenal sense of smell woke me up. I must have dozed a bit but it was over an hour before I reaquired full unconsciousness. And then I was woken (admittedly at an acceptable hour) by a large cold wet nose being thrust into my ear. Ah, pets. Can't live with them, can't live without them.

Decided to watch a movie tonight. My television went and upgraded itself and so it took me ten minutes to find out where the DVD option disappeared to! I could immediately choose from about a hundred services I didn't have but had to hunt down various trees to find the machine I did have! Huh.

Sent a text saying I'd be over at the Other House tomorrow to drop off the Lad's birthday present late morning. Got a response saying noon. Noon moves things into early afternoon and screws up my own schedule. Why did I expect anything different?

Posture challenge Day 5
Daily Goal Challenge, day 25

Really didn't do much today (see above).I turned into the street of the Other House just as the Other Car was turning out of it! So I got to the Other House and quickly scrounged some things on mine from my former kitchen and dashed back to my car. I had just made it in when the Other Car returned and so it looked as though I were just exiting my car. We couldn't find some of the things I had come back for, like my demijohn (how on earth can you lose a demijohn?!). I touched the pile of gym mats and asked, "What are you going to do with these?" as my request for some had been ignored. "Oh, I'll use them." Then I motioned to the KitchenAid food processor I'd bought as a gift about 7 years ago and that was still in its box on a shelf under the house. "Are you ever going to use that?" I'd been longing for it for years, but unfortunately I have given it away! "Yes, I just haven't got around to it yet." Yeah, only some 2,550 days in 7 years; I'm sure every one of them was flat out! Then I was asked, "Do you know where the icecream maker is?" "Oh, you mean my icecream maker?" Now, I really didn't need to take a large hand-crank icecream maker with me, but dammit, it's mine!
There was only one chicken left - all the others had been taken by foxes. They had been wandering around the front yard, even neightbours' front yards, fed on scraps, and not protected at all. I texted that if that last chook was caught, I'd take her away, and I was told, "She's family!" Well, if that's how 'family' gets treated, you can understand why I left.
I dug up some oregano and two teasel plants, and then headed off. Well, just around the bend because I thought, as I was there, I'd pop in and say hello to my nice neighbour.

She made me tea and then said she had to take her husband to the doctor, so she left me there with my tea and the dog:
20251105_205655.jpg
Dogs like this kind of scare me... Anyway, she came back, we chatted, I drank more tea, she left again to pick up her husband, then came back and invited me to go to lunch with them but I'd wasted enough of my day and went back home.

To waste even more of my day venting on the phone to my mum. I did, however, pace during the entire call and so I easily got my step goal today! Having finally got all that off my chest, I started work at about 4. Wrote my 2234 words and then typed them up on the computer (probably wrote a few more words but did some unconscious editing when transcribing) and now I'm sitting back to have a bit of a read before bed. From now, I have nothing to think about for the rest of the month except exactly what I want to do. No obligations. Nice.

Smart TVs really don't seem so smart! Last TV I bought was about 15 years ago and I don't have one anymore, but I imagine if I did go shopping for one I'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a dumb TV nowadays.
That dog is so adorable! Looks like a King Charles Cavalier with maybe a bit of Maltese in there! Is it the breed you don't like or was it just acting funny?

Sorry to hear about all the Other stuff. The Other Parent sounds very difficult to deal with.

@agc yep, she's a King Charles. She's cute but... those eyes! And she's yappy. I've got a dog the size of a small pony who might emit a single bark on a weekly basis so the contrast is stark. At least when a little dog jumps on you, you don't get crushed!
My teev's pretty dumb if it hasn't worked out yet that I don't watch Netflix or Prime or Stan or any of the other hundreds!

Looking at that photo of your backyard, I hope you don't get the sour cherries and sweet cherries mixed up. XD But it definitely explains how you missed a tree, lol.

Your dog is so cute! Though so silly. I'm still confused by why he's so interested in the candle, haha. Maybe he just likes the texture to chew on?

Best of luck with NovNov!

Awww, a King Charles dog! So cute. Though, small dogs always come with attitude. I think that's a general "small creature" thing. (As a fellow small creature, lol.)

Sorry that you had such a rough day with the Other. Definitely sounds stressful. But I'm glad you'll be able to have a more relaxing rest of your month now.

Treadmill, 40mins.

Don't know where today went. Probably to the other side of the world but I hadn't finished yet!

Had a splendid sleep last night, and even Garmin gave me a good mark (93!) so you'd think I would have been wondrously productive today. I had to go out this morning but that didn't take so very long, and then I had to set up something (tell more tomorrow) and decided it was time to clean out the hen house. I got a bit of work done then decided to get on the treadmill but today my body was doing its strange, ideosyncratic thing and after ten minutes (I stopped the incline at 2!), I had to stop and sit down for a bit. Five minutes later things were back to normal so I got back on for the final 30 minutes. Since I'd already screwed up the usual incline thing, I left it on 3 and just threw in a few short jogging intervals. After a shower, back to work. Wrote seven pages and after dinner typed them up. And now I'm going to have a bit of a read before bed.

Daily Goal Challenge, day 29 - and another increase. Whose clever idea was it to make this a month-long challenge instead of four weeks? Oh, right. Mine...
Treadmill, 30mins while reading
Circuit with EZ bar of biceps curls, O/H triceps extensions, and upright rows, 20 reps each, four rounds. A bit of fun that I'll definitely do again.

Went out this morning. It was a bit chilly - the wind was rather brisk, but overall pleasant enough for driving. I went out to get me some new playthings.
20251109_111336(1).jpg

20251109_111718(1).jpg

Not the pretty colours that @NancyTree showed but, well, different country!
And you want to see my new playthings? Here they are!
20251109_121904.jpg
Sussex x austrolorp. The woman I got them from also had (meat) rabbits (though some are sold as pets), so I got to hold a delightfully soft and fluffy little baby bunny. I wanted one, but I've nowhere to keep it, and honestly, for me, a rabbit is pretty useless. Cat - for purring and chasing mice; dog - for threatening visitors; chickens - for eggs; bunny - ? Yeah, I know, for stroking lovely soft fur and long ears, bu I was strong and didn't get one.
These little girls are 15 days old and noisy little buggers, cheeping away in my lounge room atm. I've had them out, sitting on my chest and shoulders. The white one (she's got a bit of black trim on her wings) was happy to crouch on my hand and snooze, but the black one roamed over my shoulders and across my neck and was quite bold. I'm open for name suggestions! With these cute little things around, it's amazing I got anything done today. :)

Daily Goal Challenge, day 30 - and this challenge is over but now I'm stuck with a step goal 2000 steps more than one month ago! Can I keep it up? I'll give it a go.
Treadmill, 40mins, 1-11 incline and down again. I threw in some running intervals once I was getting back down to about 6 percent incline.
Single-arm rows 3 x 10. Increased the weight significantly. Don't believe I suddenly got strong; rather I've really been holding back.
Knee rehab squat 3 x 10

Played with chicks. Not solely for my pleasure but to get them bonded with me. A chicken that lets you pick her up is much easier to deal with than one that flaps away. You don't realise the variation in chick noises until they're in your lounge room and making a heck of a racket! Chirps, whistles, tweets, shrieks - there are at least four distinct 'songs'.
The name suggestions have been... interesting. I'll make my decision in a day or two.

Of course! We are not wholly uncivilised.
We even have Kinder Surprise!
Ha, of course you do are civilized*, but from travelling I know all brands are not marketed everywhere, LOL. So excuse me if it sounded condescending, it was merely curious! And grins for Kinder Surprise, that was my beloved grandpa's treat for me.

* Despite all the creepy crawlies and other nasties ready to kill humans that you got in your island/continent! I'd be easily scared!

Okay, let's put this to bed now. It's true we Aussies pride ourselves for surviving the various harbingers of death that surround us in this great land, but here's the truth of it.
Of the 713 animal-related death between 2001 and 2021, 222 death involved horses, generally, falling off one. 92 involved cattle, half of them road incidents (apparently cattle are lousy drivers). Next on the list, at 82 deaths, are dogs, mostly from bites but a lot from falls. Now, as far as I know, France has all three of these particular animals.
Fourth on the list is the humble 'roo, causing 53 deaths, all of them traffic incidents. Snakes come in at 50 deaths, bees at 45 (anaphylaxis and unlikely native bees). Then there were sharks at 39 and crocodiles at 25 (but I wonder how many of them were tourists being stupid).
No deaths from spider bites since the antivenin for the funnelweb arrived in 1981.
Curiously, no cat-related deaths, which just proves how well they cover their tracks!

Elliptical, 30 mins. Thought for a change I'd get on this torture device. After ten minutes, I decided I'd had enough but convinced myself to do just another five minutes. I could do that, right? And by the time I'd reached fifteen minutes, I reckoned I could go twenty. At twenty, I could reach twenty-five. At twenty-five, that's so close to half an hour, I may as well keep going. So I did. Got to stop listening to that voice in my head that says, that's enough, you can't go further, you can't lift more. That voice is a liar!

Also got out with the mattock and hacked away at my rock-solid ground, chipping away more of the lumps the builder left. Also chopped at the pile of sub-soil he'd left. Some of the things I chopped were not solid clods of earth but rather bits of old concrete or mortar or fragments of brick. That did hurt a little. Raked some of the loosened earth to level up outside the new back door. Still a long way to go there but at least I've started.

This morning when I had the chicks out, running over my chest and around the back of my neck, the dark one jumped off me and onto the floor. Creed was very good and stayed where he was, his eyes on her. Then she cheeped and flew back up (yes, chicks can fly. Young chickens can fly. Older chickens can fly unless they get too heavy. That's why you clip their wings) onto my lap and ran up to my shoulder. I guess she's starting to see me as 'mum'. The white one is not as adventurous.

I slack off way too much. All the time. So today I told myself I'd write ten pages. Easy enough to do on the computer, more of a challenge by hand. By the beasts' dinnertime, I had done 9 2/3 pages and finished the scene so I gave myself a pass on the missing 1/3. Then I had to type it into the computer and that's a bore. I'm a lot slower this year and it's because I'm handwriting and then typing it up. Previous years I'd hit 50,000 by around the 17th, but I'll not do that this year. I'm only at 30,000 now. But if I stop slacking off, I should get a decent amount done. I know I can; I've done it before.

@PetiteSheWolf My intention is not to reduce fear, but rather demonstrate that we Aussies respect our dangerous critters. It's the ones you don't suspect that'll get you, every time.

I did procrastinate today but I, probably like so many people, like to think that what I did was actually Useful and Necessary. I was plugging something into its recharging cable when I thought how Necessary it would be to label my cables so it's easy to know which one is for which device. So out came the trust label-maker and ten minutes later, a handful of cables was neatly labelled. I'm sure you can all see how terribly Necessary this was and how wonderfully Useful this labelling will prove to be.

I'd left the door of the chicks' cage a bit ajar and they burst through, standing in shocked stillness of the concrete floor before moving again. And just because I love sharing useless information: did you know that the magnetic field of the average smartphone's magnet is about 1,000 microteslas whereas the magnetic field generated by a neuron firing in your brain is between 50 and 500 femtoteslas - or 20 billion times less than the phone's magnet. Remember that for your next trivia night...

My hip is giving me gyp again. Obviously needs a bit (lot) of love, so I'll see what I can do. I'd rather not have to pay a physio, but we shall see.

The part of the back yard that I levelled yesterday is a pleasure to walk on. More to go. And I discovered that my pear tree, all about 6m of it, is an ornamental pear! Why would anyone want a ginormous ornamental pear? I didn't even get to see any of the sweet cherries. I think the birds must have eaten all the blossoms before the fruit got a chance to form. The sour cherries are starting to ripen, so I think I may have a chance to get some of them. (And think of what to do with them!). There were no plums at all. Next year, I've really got to work on this orchard area.

I'd been watching "Falling Skies" and thought it was okay. Engaging. Then I discovered that there were 5 seasons and I only had 4. Oh no! Anyway, the end of the second season came with the arrival of a new alien and I thought, oh yeah... Watched the first ep of season 3. Honestly, if aliens A invaded the planet of aliens B (and we don't, at least in this first episode, find out if they'd actually been kicked off Planet B), I find it hard to swallow that aliens B would hunt down aliens A and rescue other planets that aliens A have invaded. I mean, come on. There's only so much you can accept, even with sci-fi. If they'd just continued with the human resistance and the skitter rebellion and hooking up with them, then I might have continued watching. As it was, I got through that first episode of season 3 and then I put it away and watched the first episode of "Warehouse 13" instead. Which seems okay...

It's been really windy. Possibly the vestiges of the Severe Tropical Cyclone from Up North. Anyway, I popped out to the Big Shed and saw a thin cable hanging from the roof that had obviously been blown down. Gave it a bit of a tug but it resisted me so I grab out the ladder and took a look. The cable was attached to a small solar panel that appears to have been plastic-cemented to the shed roof. Cool. I returned to the laundry (where await Things I Have Yet To Do) and routed out the box of a small solar shed light I'd bought months ago. Stuck the cable into the light and voila! it worked! So, hey, I don't have to bother with trying to affix my little solar panel to the shed roof - the previous tenants had solved the problem of their lightless shed with solar power (though they'd taken the lights with them). Now I have light in my Big Shed. :welcome:

The chicks are growing and are bloody noisy. Last night they were really carrying on, and I said, "Oi, girls!" and they stopped and stared at me. After a little while, they began again but this time whispering. Footsy poked her paw in through the wire at one of them.
