The Postpartum Wish

Hi,

I’m Marija (the “j” is silent!), four months postpartum. I gained over 30 kg during pregnancy—and now I’m working on taking my body back.

Before getting pregnant, I was becoming a runner. 10K runs felt easy, progress felt unstoppable. Now, at 115–120 kg (I’m 188 cm tall), running isn’t an option yet—my joints need time.

So I’m starting where I am. Daily morning workouts, even when the baby decides how long they last.

I’m here to stay consistent, get stronger, and earn my runs back.

Thanks, Darebee!

Update.

I hired a personal coach whom I see once a week. Last week, we tested my strength and endurance. I had to do nine different exercises, each for exactly one minute.

The results were:
  • Squats: 30
  • Push-ups: 26
  • Jumping jacks: 69
  • Sit-ups: 49
  • Skipping rope: 55
  • Burpees: 23
  • Lunges: 24
  • Suicide sprints: 26
  • Plank: 34 seconds

I only did the easiest versions of each exercise (push-ups on my knees, squats to 90 degrees, etc.).

Keeping in mind that I weigh 120 kg and am four months postpartum, what does the hive think of the beginning of my journey? I don’t think it’s as bad as I expected it to be.

I am proud of you.
It took time to be pregnant, and now it will take time to get your body back. Just be a bit patient. Some movement would surely help. Breastfeeding helps also.
Weight training is included - the baby gains weight. Over all - cool that you take the time for you. Best wishes for your journey.

Update.

I am trying so hard - doing all of the exercises my gynecologist recommended daily, fasting, going to see my personal coach... It's not working fast enough! I am so afraid! My baby is getting heavier by the day and when she starts walking I'll have to be more flexible than I am now. Sometimes the pain in my lower back gets so bad that I have to put her down on the floor instantly even if she is crying.

I just want to start running again... I feel like my problems will go away quickly when and if I ever get to that point again.

Update.

I almost feel like giving up and accepting my weight as something unavoidable.

There's an old saying in Slovenia that the first child a woman has takes her beauty away (...the second child takes away her health and the third child takes everything). That's how I feel.

Rn I'm at 120 kg. I had some joint pain so I stopped training for five days and all of the weight came back. I feel sick. I feel hopeless.

It takes time, and carrying a little baby is exhausting, even more than the pregnancy, so cannot be everywhere. Take time to rest, take care of your health, and i am sure you will succeed, but be patient. And I am sure you are a beautiful mom.

Just take it a little bit at a time. Even if it is only one workout a day. Even something simple like going up and down a flight of stairs 5 or 10 times. Every little bit helps. This isn't a fast process so a little bit of patience and kindess to yourself will go a long way. You can do it! Just take it one step at a time.

Update.

I'm at 114 kg! I know it doesn't seem much, but I feel instant relief everytime I step on the scale and the number's even a little bit lower than the week before. I feel better, I feel motivated.

The nutricionist at the free clinic I mentioned (I think) measured my body composition. It seems that the hard work did pay off -- apart from obviously being obese, my body's very muscular as well! At the time when she took my measurements I had around 68 kg of pure muscle. That's a lot!!! I suppose it's also the only thing keeping me upright.

I tried running for the first time after giving birth. That did not go so well due to my knees being to weak to support my weight. I still have knee pain after that attempt.

I did the Darebee baseline workout plan and now I'm starting with 30 days of yoga. Wish me luck!
