Been a little worried that I'm still slightly off my strict routine but hanging in there. Stress had me sick on Friday the 13th (interesting) and it's the first run I've skipped in a while. Soldiering onward and I know that I really need to fix my sleep hygiene.

Haven't run yet today but going to do a shorter long run (10 miles) so I can hopefully recover and get to bed early. Without proper sleep my muscles are sore for days and I feel like I'm losing benefits afforded by recovering properly.

🎉 Ran 30km for the first time ever yesterday!!! 🎉

Pretty psyched that I have been able to push my long runs to 30km. It's almost hard to believe and I'm slowly approaching a casual weekend marathon long run. 😆 My playlist yesterday was spotify://Matador 23k (had to deal w/ it looping bc I haven't finished my 30k playlist yet).

A huge component of my success yesterday was a new fueling strategy.
Before the run I had:
  • 2 coffees with whole milk added
  • a banana
  • protein shake with my usual powdered supplements (a scoop of gatorade powder in there)
  • remaining supplement pills/capsules
On the actual run I took:
  • 100g Jelly Belly jelly beans
  • 125g tailwind + 800ml water
After the run I had:
  • another protein shake (another scoop of gatorade)
  • a monster (these are gross but I like them lol)
  • 246g of chicken
  • another 100g of jelly beans

Jelly Belly makes "sport beans" but the difference between those and the regular 49 assorted flavors jelly beans was trivial (added b vitamins basically) so I went with the ones I know I enjoy (think they are also cheaper). It felt like a ton of sugar during the run but it also felt like I had endless energy so I'm definitely onto something.

Let's pretend I ate vegetables.

Have felt good about strength training lately though I need to figure out my plans for incorporating weight bench exercises into my routine. Do I abandon IRONBORN and design a new schedule, adapt it so I use the bench when I can, or do I keep it untouched and simply add more sets throughout the week?

Figured I'd try a new post format that's more automatic since posting was starting to feel daunting. Also who doesn't love tables of data? :LOL:

I started running on nearby trails more often and it's really incredible. My run on the 10th had a moment almost exactly like this GIF and I stopped to sit down and look up at the stars on the water's edge. Running on trails in the dark feels pretty neat but I think I'll prioritize daytime running.

My run today was 24 km with 12 km on trails and 12 on roads. Definitely works some new muscles; the arches of my feet feel tired.

Oh, this was my week w/ my most running volume ever and I came in at exactly 60 km. That 60 km does include my cool down walks if you want to get technical but I'll take it anyway lol.

TW gross: Got a new toenail falling off. It's in the turning purple and feeling very strange stage. It's not actually a problem and has happened before (doesn't hurt thankfully). Always keep toenails trimmed before a long run =P

Thanks @Laura Rainbow Dragon and @CODawn! I almost didn't notice with the way I've been looping though IRONBORN and it's so important to celebrate!

I have been feeling pretty amazing lately. Health is a gift with benefits I couldn't have imagined before investing a pretty significant chunk of time info fitness. I thought about that for a while on my trail run this morning and am so grateful I am exactly where I am. For some reason my health metrics seem to be very positive lately and I'm not sure if it's from hitting trails more often or what but things like heart rate variability, sleep quality, and overall readiness to exercise made a visible improvement on all my tracking graphs (which correlate with how I'm feeling also =P).

When I woke up today I was feeling overwhelmed by a lot of annoying tasks ahead and actually set an alarm for later planning to postpone my run but my brain thankfully decided otherwise and I got up. I knew it was icy and cold and worried that the trails would be dangerous. Turned out amazingly and I ran without any slips, falls, or toe stubs (still learning how to run on trails). The snow made a very romantic crunching sound the whole way which I could hear through the quiet parts of my playlist. The rest of the day was as annoying as I'd anticipated but I tackled some things I don't have to worry about anymore which is nice.

Plank days are becoming less dreadful which probably means I need to plank for longer.

It's been a while and I like that I can just render the table above from strava for updates.

A lot happened since my last update. I've been generally feeling pretty amazing and grateful lately but life always throws a few punches.

Been ramping up my time on the trails and absolutely loving it. Had a couple of injuries but nothing major. Rather embarrassingly, I re-chipped a tooth with my water bottle on one run. It was a hard plastic top and I just brought it to my face too quickly. Luckily I kept the chip (between my lip and gums) and the dentist re-glued it in place and it's exactly like it was before. No pain but reawakened some weird emotions as I was self conscious about my teeth growing up. I got a camelbak water bottle with a soft bite valve and a straw so there's no danger of a repeat. It's taken a good number of runs to reduce the anxiety from that but I think I'm over it.

Trails are also pretty brutal on my ankles so I had to take a week off around the same time as the story above. I always get nervous when my running is interrupted but after I returned from about 1.5 weeks off I broke my 10k, 15k, and 10 mile PRs on the same run by a pretty huge margin. Neat.

Trying to figure out my size in new model version of running shoe I've been running in and I can't decide. It's like my usual size is just a tiny bit too small and my feet feel like they're swimming in half size up. I will probably have to keep one of each size as I have put 100km on one pair already and still can't decide, heh. I always buy last year's model now for running shoes so I pay around 50%-60% what they cost new which is neat.

Run tonight was ~10 miles on trails then 4 miles on the roads. I made a new route that followed the perimiters of ponds which turned out to introduce me to some new technical terrain that was fun. Time on the trails flies by and it's always lovely even when it's brutal hills. I like the cool down on roads because I can recover a bit then do some quicker running to cap things off.

The turkey situation was interesting because I've run by this group of turkeys for about 3 years and never had one follow. They are usually pretty avoidant and have responded in the past to the same motions you'd use to direct traffic lol. The male turkeys were not around and one of the female turkeys peeled off from the group to stalk me at a walking pace. When I realized it could be mad I turned around and put my arms out and hissed at it which nearly caused it to back away but instead it decided to double down so I was walking backwards even faster looking at an even angrier turkey 😂. When I finally decided to run for a bit I just wanted to stop causing the poor thing distress.

@Tileenah seeing the fox was an awesome experience! One downside to updating less frequently is that it's harder to remember all the stories whether they be emotional revelations or nature sightings (or some combination of both). Sometimes it's hard to tell coyotes and foxes apart here (at night anyway) but I am very confident this was a fox friend.

I think scenarios like the tooth situation are opportunities to sharpen gratitude when feeling bad for myself is a natural tendency. I have a lot to be grateful for and the way it happened had some fortuitous aspects. Luckily I have a dentist I really trust, dental insurance, dentist was willing to try something a bit experimental to avoid a more invasive fix, and I'm probably more emotionally stable than I've been in years. Just want to reiterate it was a painless cosmetic re-chip of a piece already glued on so all the difficulty was in my head and worrying about the future. I will say that the dentist would not have tried the experimental/less invasive fix without me asking so I'm getting better at advocating for myself when it's difficult but really matters.

Big ol' update today. Been running and going through IRONBORN with some pretty great consistency.

🎉 Yesterday I ran 44km non-stop for the first time making it my first Marathon distance ever. 🎉

Almost hard to believe but it took me almost precisely 4 years to make it here from a place resembling rock bottom (where I couldn't run 0.25 miles non stop). So happy to have the 40km badge now.

Been too long since I've checked in. About to run my second official marathon this Sunday and I'm feeling well-trained and strong. It's interesting that the hardest part of the marathon will actually be traveling for me; I keep saying I'm golden as long as I am at the start line on time.

I've been training consistently with running and IRONBORN since my last update and am always thinking about the community here. This place is still my foundation and while I haven't been around the forums I am grateful for everyone every time I use my strength (physical and mental).

It's funny that life is so good yet still so hard. I run 40km a week no problem but still struggle with basic stuff like going to bed on time, eating well, etc. I have made progress on diet but if I fixed my sleep I feel like I'd be twice as strong for all the training I put in.

Hope everyone is doing well and keeping imaginations active while working out. The magic happens so gradually sometimes it's hard to notice but we are becoming more powerful every day.
