Foundation Day 9
Punch-Up challenge Day 6
Lower Body & Core challenge Day 3
Treadmill walk, 20mins, prog 1
Stationary bike, 10mins. Realised I hadn't been on this since February!

Finished that darned coving and shoved the piano back into position. Pianos. Are. Heavy. Even on their noisy little metal wheels that point north-south when you need to move it east-west. Still, it's there. Note: if you get a 100+ year-old piano, bear in mind that it will have interesting carving that you can only dust out with a paintbrush!

Still no rain, despite tantalising forecasts... :( And we were promised a wet spring.

And here's some food for thought (pun not really intended, but I'll go with it):

Foundation Day 10
Punch-Up challenge Day 7
Lower Body & Core challenge Day 4

I didn't bother with the treadmill today because I had to go out shopping and I parked in such a way that I could get a good walk in and easily achieved my daily step goal. I had to go to a shopping centre that was about 25 minutes away (half the distance is at 80-100km/h) and that's why I don't go there often. I was about to head into one shop when I realised that I had forgotten my membership card (and it's one that you can't put on your phone). Damn. So I went into a supermarket and there what I wanted was about $10 more expensive than it would have been in the first shop. Then I had a sudden idea and turned to a third shop, and there I got it (on special!) for about $9 less than the first shop. So that was serendipitous because I wouldn't otherwise have gone there (must remember for future!). I always reckon it's better to be born lucky than rich.

I wonder why the weather bureau thinks it's a good idea to tell you that there's a 20% chance of up to .2mm of rain. That's like saying "there's a very small chance that you might experience so little rain you'll not notice it". Honestly, if I didn't hang my washing out on any day the bureau forecast rain, I'd probably never get it out - as oppose, of course, to days we actually have rain! We last had rain on 20th September - just before my water tank was connected...

Although I haven't bothered to record this, I have continued with that whole First Thing Water since I did the challenge ages ago. Perhaps once or twice since I did it I have forgotten (probably when rushed by unexpectedly early workmen) but on the whole I've continued the practice.

And speaking of practices I have continued - or, in this case, discontinued - today marks my first day of not doing my usual Duolingo. I hit day 2222 yesterday and reckoned that was as good a time as any to stop. It's one thing to say you'll do something, another altogether to do it, and right now it does feel a little uncomfortable, as though I've forgotten something. That'll pass.

And the painting continues. Patched the wall, removed the curtains, painted the window frame and three door frames. Tomorrow, the second coat and then I can replace the furniture. Seems hardly worth it because around the end of the month, I'll have to move everything again in order to do the floors, but I've had enough of this disorder.

The lilac is flowering. Totally one of the best scents. Lilac, jasmine, violets, sweet peas, orange blossom, the smell of the air before a heavy rainstorm, the smell of late winter/early spring when there is a heady mixture of various blossoms and the scent of renewal, the smell of a creek trickling through trees - these are the smells that will fragrance my eventual Paradise (always assuming I'm going up and not down!).

@agc yeah, DVDs are good for that - many have the option to listen in a different language. My local Vinnie's actually had a series in my primary language so I'll just turn off subtitles and listen. And I've got loads of books in different languages. I'll not get bored.

Wonderfully productive morning. Daylight Savings always throws me. I wake up at my usual time but now it's still dark so I go back to sleep and then am woken by my alarm. It's not a "wake up" alarm, it's a "take your pill" alarm, and when it wakes me, the whole day starts slow and I feel like I'm playing catch-up. But this morning I woke later than usual but before my alarm and I'm hoping that's the beginning of many.

The cat had been sleeping on my lap, the dog at my feet. I had to get up so I put the cat next to the dog. She sat there for about 5 minutes, just blinking sleepily, then she settled down and went to sleep. As it's been a while since I've seen any posted animal pictures, it's time to revive the practice, so here's a cute picture for your viewing pleasure:

Sorted some of the remaining kitchen stuff out of my narrow laundry and re-organised the new pantry a bit. It's getting there.

Thinking about re-organising my lounge and gym. Traditionally, when you enter a house, once you're through the entryway, you're in the lounge. I'm thinking of changing that in my little house and making what is nominally my lounge into my gym and vice versa.
So - thoughts? Pros? Cons? I'll seal the floors in a couple of weeks time so I've still got thinking/considering time.

Given the huge number of workouts you've posted in this thread I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say workout motivation isn't an issue for you? Like personally I'd consider which room I would be passing through more often, because if your gym is easily accessible then you're more likely to work out (i.e. if it's out of sight then it's out of mind so keep it in sight), but for you that might not be a problem.

I agree with @aku-chan that having visitors walk through your gym to get to the rest of the house could seem a bit strange but I mean if they're friends and visiting you then it probably won't matter to them. Go with what's convenient for you. You did mention sealing the floors however - assuming that this decision "locks in" what the rooms are used for (like, the gym will have one type of flooring and the living room will have another), then it might be worth considering the resale value of the house, as then it'll be potential buyers who will find it strange instead of guests if you decide you want to move.

Thanks, @aku-chan and @agc Fortunately I don't have to bother about visitors because apart from my mum's annual visit, I don't get any. Funny thing, once you join the ranks of the unwages, you generally have no further contact with the people you used to work with because the only thing you had in common was that you all worked in the same place. And in my various roles, I usually worked alone anyway.
@agc by 'sealing' the floors, I meant exactly that. They are concrete and I'm just going to whack on some sealant. Easy peasy. And as for resale - who could afford to buy another house somewhere? Anywhere? It can sell when I'm no longer bothered, and it'll probably be a knock-down anyway because the 2 bedrooms are tiny and there's no garage.

Daily Goal Challenge, day 3 - this is my little month-long challenge, ensuring I meet my own personal step goal daily. My instructions say: "choose an achievable (but not too easy) daily step goal for yourself. Complete that every day for a month. EC: increase goal by a set amount (100, 500, 1000 - your choice) every week." I've been thinking about this for a while now, and decided that Sunday is, for me, a good day to change my goal, so I'll set my challenge as having started on Sunday. :) Now let's see if I can get EC!

Had a particularly Bad Night last night. Actually, that sounds worse than it really was. Most of the night was pretty good - the bit in the beginning and the bit at the end. It was the bit in the middle that spoilt it for everyone. So I was feeling a little... limp this morning and decided to take it easy. I decided to rearrange my gym.

When I am sure about a course of action, I go ahead and do it. When there is the slightest bit of doubt, I'm open to asking for advice, opinion, wondering if I had missed something. And this is what I recently did. @aku-chan and @agc both responded and their comments got me thinking, looking at things from a different angle, but I still thought that what I had decided was what I'd do. Until @aku-chan made one more little comment:
Your gym space does look a bit claustrophobic at the moment!
It was that "at the moment" that did it for me. Whether intended or not, it suggested to me that it could change, and not necessarily because I moved it to another room. So over the last couple of days I've been having a hard look at the space, and today I finally moved things around. Marcy stayed where she was because I'm not moving her again! The bike and elliptical are now side by side with plenty of room around them. The squat rack wasn't so heavy (unfortunately) as much as awkward, but I shifted it, and now I have room for my bench to be out all the time and I think the space looks far more workable and pleasant. Additionally, as I had the door hinged in such a way that when it opens, it can be flat against the wall and there's room to do that now, so when I get a screen door fitted to keep the flies and chickens out and the cat in, there'll be a nice cross-breeze. So @aku-chan :flowers:

Friday already. How did that happen?

One of the benefits of having few sort furnishings (or furnishings at all, for that matter) and concrete floors is that you get a great echo. Sound waves bouncing all over the place. So when I sat down at the piano and hammered out Sky's Toccato, even riddled with errors, to me it sounded great. Not, of course, as good as Sky's...

I really didn't feel like eating this morning so I decided I wouldn't. I'd have one of those intermittent fasting days or OMAD or something that sounds as though I'm not just too lazy to get myself some food. Felt a bit peckish around 3 for a few minutes and then later began to wonder if I'd actually bother eating at all but, although I still wasn't feeling hungry, I made myself some soup around the usual time. And then had a protein shake because my protein today was way low - even with the shake. Man, I've really got to do something about my eating habit. Or lack thereof.

Woke up this morning feeling good!
Back in the day when you could add .wav files to your computer, my computer opened with the first line of this. Hmm, can you still do that?
Anyway, woke way before my alarm, or even my usual time - and I got up! I was feeling strangely (and delightfully) positive today. Even made a tray-bake which will provide six dinners (or 10 breakfasts and one dinner which was tonight's).

Here, we're not allowed to use our phones in our cars. You'll get booked even if it's on your lap but not being used. Sometimes, though, I want to record thoughts, so I bought myself a small, very basic voice recorder. This morning when I woke up, I reached for it, but the cat, having also just woken up, was in her purry, pummelling mood, and she got going, as she generally does, making that loud popping purr which trying to soften my collarbones (fortunately that hasn't worked yet). I couldn't help myself so I have a 2-minute recording of my cat's loud purrs. I mean, you would, wouldn't you?

I recorded Pixie snoring. She is very loud for a cat; sometimes wakes me up! Unfortunately I wasn't able to upload it.

We actually had some rain today! Not too exciting but it was a bit. Unfortunately the weather bureau has changed their website and made it essentially useless. Appearance has perhaps improved but functionality has totally tanked. Anyway, apparently since midnight, a whole 5mm was recorded toda, but I don't think there was that much in this neck of the woods. That makes 5.6mm for this month. Not seeing that "wet spring" yet... And my tank isn't getting filled. The plumber did a disservice by putting the gravity-fed tap higher than it needed to be, so my tank has to be at least a quarter full before I can get any water out of it. :(
Had a lazy day today and enjoyed the grey sky. Nearly went shopping but I managed to put it off until tomorrow. :welcome:

I had to go out today. Finally got some sealant for my concrete floors, so now I have to move furniture around, wash the floors, and get to it. But while I was out, that horrible dog of mine still managed to find something to destroy. I did a look-around and figured everything was fine - only to come home to find he'd chewed up the box that contained the electrical appliance I had intended to return (how can I do that now?!) and (now this is where it gets really weird) a citrus-scented candle! At least his breath wasn't as bad as usual.

I ran out of energy today. Seriously. It was as though every mitochondrion in my body said, "yeah, nah, I got nothing." And I'm not exaggerating when I say that eating a slice of Swiss cheese was hard work, made my jaw ache with fatigue. Fortunately I'd done some weights this morning and only tanked towards the end of the treadmill walk. Had to wait until late afternoon before I could do anything else. Able to move again now so some mitochondria are coming back online. Yet my day was not without worth. I watched some very interesting videos on chickens - fermented feed, coop design, such like. Then I took a stroll out the back to the trees that are, for some unknown-to-me reason, fenced off from the rest of the yard. They're near the back fence and when I looked at one, I noticed that - flowers! Oh, great, it's an elder! I wanted an elder (got to prevent lightning strikes and witches, you know!) and I have a great big one - though there are some dead branches that need to be cut off. Filled now with pleasure, I checked out the other trees to see what they were. There is an enormous pear tree (know how big a pear gets in over 20 years?), a plum, a sweet cherry (I think), and a sour cherry that is covered in tiny green fruits. Birds will get a lot of these so I'll have to net it somehow - or at least the part I can reach. I'll dismantle the 'greenhouse' - it'll take more work to get it useable than is worth. I have a small walk-in greenhouse if I need to use one, and that space will be good for veg beds. So when I can't really do anything, I go out and find a whole heap of things that need doing!

Punch on, bees. Defend the Hive! :ghost:

My initial thought was "how did he not realise there's an entire Woolies fruit section in his backyard" and then I remembered when my wife told me we had to remove a tree from the front yard because it was blocking sunlight for her veggie patch, and despite living here for an entire year at that point I'd never noticed the 5 metre tall tree right next to the front gate. So, you know, stones in glass houses and all that.

Almost at the end of the Foundation Program by the look of things. Good luck with the last few days!

Got to bed very late last night. Okay, perhaps very early this morning! I made the mistake of going back to the beginning of this log and reading what I was up to in 2022 and onwards. Fascinating stuff! I was rivetted. Really, I only meant to go back to 2024 and see which programmes I had done. As I dumped all my badges from Darebee 1.0 and I was really slack with adding any in 2.0, I wanted to know which programmes I had done since their updates. Yep, Zero Hero (the only one I had ticked) was it. So all the other programmes have been rejigged in some way since I last did them. That gives me a huge choice of programmes. Maybe even some of the ones I hadn't particularly liked will have changed in such a way that I now like them.

Winter has kicked in again. Yesterday and today around 13-14 degrees, but the weekend is supposed to be about 28-29 degrees. Tonight I've actually been eyeing my heater but instead I've stuck my cold hands under the cat. Well, if she insists on sleeping on my lap...

I've spent a few weeks getting back into things, and yesterday and today I changed up my weights, checking out the maximum weight I could lift for 10 reps. With the biceps curls, less was a little too easy and there was nothing in between, so I just cranked out six each arm. I'll build up to ten reps. The single-arm rows were a little too easy too, so next time I'll beef them up. It's very satisfying.

Chilly again today. Warmer than yesterday but it was still difficult to change into workout gear and I really enjoyed the hot shower afterwards. And getting out of bed late this morning really wasn't my fault. I'd got up, let the dog out, fed the beasts and then, just for a few minutes, slipped back into my toasty-warm bed. But then the cat joined me, snuggling up and purring and closing her eyes so how could I possibly disturb her? I'm not a monster. Actually, I am. I did get up and she moved a little but stayed under the doona and didn't move even when I shook up the doona and then replaced it. She only moved when the pillow was lain atop of her.

Have you ever noticed how sometimes, something you smell seems so much better than other times when you've smelt that exact same smell? Today for me it was the smell of frying mushrooms.

Yep! I get this sometimes. I know with food it definitely tastes better when you're hungry/need the energy - I had beans straight from the can after a long hike once, didn't even chuck them on the camping stove and they were magic! Tried them again at home the next week and it wasn't so great.

I wonder what the deciding factor is with smell? Hunger? Temperature/humidity?

The Lad's birthday is coming up and I remembered what I promised to get him so I (reluctantly) set out to the shops this morning. 3 or 4 years ago, I bought myself (for about $20) a pull-up bar that hangs from a doorframe and every time he's been here, he uses it so I said I'd get him one. But the shop I'd bought mine from didn't have any. Neither did the next one I went to, or the third (though there they had a spin-lock curl bar and mine's those horrible ring clips that never really hold the weights tightly as they clink together and I hate that, but I convinced myself not to as that wasn't what I was after). So I took a deep breath and went into the sports store and there they had one - for $139.99!! You've got to be out of your tree! I could get one on ebay for $22 but unfortunately it's too late to order now and get it by Wednesday. :( Honestly, I didn't think it would be so hard. Dunno what I'll get him now. Probably just some clothes. He always needs those. Maybe I'll get him the bar for Christmas.

This evening I pulled out my three Halloween candle holders and lit candles. Yeah, it's a mite early but they look so cool I reckon they deserve a few days of admiration.

I was reading an actual real physical book today, not just using my e-reader, and I can't walk any faster than 4.5km while holding a book if I want to be able to read comfortably. For the first fifteen minutes of the walk, my HR didn't even get into zone 1. I've had days when my Garmin hasn't even registered these 30min walks as any sort of exercise! Odd.

It's November, a (mentally) busy month for me so I'm not tying myself down to anything strict this month (Fit December will come next month and that'll do). Treadmill and some weights will probably be about it. Nothing to sneeze at.

NovNov, day 1: 2018 words. This year I've been writing first drafts by hand in A4 notebooks. It's way slower than typing (at least twice as slow if not more) but I've been enjoying it. Once I've done the day's writing, I type it up and that gets me the word count. It's a bit tedious typing up what I've just written, but it serves two purposes: one, it makes it easier to edit when the time comes, and two, it allows me to read over what I've written to check for flow, and to see if I've covered what I wanted to cover in that bit. Also, writing by hand (as well as rewiring the brain), I get to use a different coloured pen every day. :) Today was sky blue. I have 9 more colours (if you include black) to choose from.
