Keep your core, quads, and hamstrings engaged in these moves to protect your lower back. Draw your navel in and up to support your up-dog and prevent you from dumping into your lower back. If your thighs are externally rotated in up dog (and in other backbends) this can cause compression in the lower back. Think about drawing your inner thighs towards one another to keep them neutral.
