San Diego has a lot of little canyons between neighbourhoods. Sometimes they have great trails. I can do a nice little round from my sister's with a 2,5 km stretch in the canyon behind the house.



This morning we had a bit of rain and the webs of the spiders looked marvellous.

I did the same run as a few days ago, in the little neighbourhood canyon. It's a quite grey day. I saw a lot of birds though. I managed to snap a picture of a blue heron. I don't know if it's the same species as the European blue heron, it looks very much alike.



Edit: just found out the European blue heron is called grey heron in English. Since the lighter parts of the heron in the picture are more pinkish than light grey, this is a great blue heron. There must also be a noticable difference in proportion of the legs, but well, the bird is standing in the water and did not want to show any leg.

Yes, your photo here is of a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias). It is a North and Central American bird. They are magnificent!

The Great Blue is a close relative of your Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), but isn't normally found in your part of the world.
