Valeria sighed. She had been in this new world of Vashrunn for a couple weeks now, but she still couldn't get used to how danged hot it was all day, or how her new, shorter, hairstyle left her shoulders feeling oddly naked (The events in the Labyrinth had taken such a toll on her hair that no amount of washing and brushing ever sorted it out. Her only recourse had been to cut it off, and now it came to just below her ears she was realising that naming yourself after your hair was a bit silly), and now Ralf had insisted she get some proper fight training at a place called the House of the Valkyrie.
She had seen the winged warrior women walking, or, more often, swooping around the city before. Ralf claimed that their training programs were widely considered some of the best and she wouldn't end up with wings by the end, but at the moment she wasn't sure how much she trusted him or the Adventurers Guild. Their motives may have been well intentioned, but tricking her into taking part in a literal game of life or death to see if she was up to joining their secret society of multiversal defenders was another thing that wasn't sitting well with her at the moment.
The House itself was a large and very tall building built on the outskirts of the city, its upper floors containing many openings from which Valeria watched the Valkyries flying off to do whatever it was Valkyries did. Slowly but surely the large crowd of people gathered around the main entrance slowly made their way inside. The hall inside was vast, Ralf had been right about one thing, Valkyrie training was very popular. The mass of people were divided into smaller groups, each overseen by its own Valkyrie (Hers was an older woman with jet-black wings), and then each group was split into pairs. "The first test is a sparring match." explained the raven-winged woman, "Those that win will move on to the training itself, the others will have to try again next year."
Valeria's opponent was a young woman about her age but taller, her very tanned skin suggesting she was a native of this world. "Begin." The young woman bowed to Valeria, idiot, she might not have had any formal fight training, but Valeria knew you didn't expect your opponent to fight fair. Before the woman raised her head, Valeria quickly took a step forward and brought her knee up hard into the woman's face, she staggered back, nose broken and gushing blood, but Valeria kept up the momentum and unleashed a flurry of punches until an arm, and wing, came up, separating the two.
"You are the winner." the Valkyrie motioned to Valeria and handed her a little metal badge shaped like wings, before moving on to monitor the other fights. Valeria's opponent shot her a look of pure hatred before storming off out of the hall. "Well" She thought as she pinned her new badge next to her blue Guild one "I'm not here to make friends."
